Set eggs 3/5. Looking for others to hatch with!

Cali Chick, you have been a talker this morning.....are you excited????
You bought three dozen eggs. Were they all BBS? That is the most of what I have developing in the incubator right now, but I have a fair number of porcelain and a few lavendars. I want them ALL, LOL!
Yes, I am very excited about these silkies. They are all from BBS pens. I only bought 24 eggs, but 11 were infertile. The other 13 all looked good on Day18 and went into lockdown Tuesday. I want them ALL to hatch too!
I love the dog house idea. How creative. So now I am going to be on the hunt for a dog house. I found a big piece of plywood someone had out for the trash last week, but I didn't think it would fit in my SUV and I had both dogs in the car with me and I know the smaller one would be dumb enough to jump out while I was trying to nab it. I had to look longingly at it on the trip there and back to where I was going.

As of 9PM 6 chicks have hatched...Looks like 3 splash and 3 blue.

3 more eggs are zipping, but 2 of them have been stuck for a long time. One of the chicks zipped downward (9 hours ago) and can't seem to make progress in the right direction. The other stuck-chick has the shell cracked all around, but the membrane is thick and not seperating so it can't get the top off. I REALLY want to help them, but I won't until the 3rd zipper hatches. The other 4 eggs have not even pipped yet that I can see, so I might assist later unless I see new pips.

I'm a nervous wreck about the 2 chicks that seem stuck.

My humidity is near 80% (since they are hatching it went up...previously it was 70%), vents open, temperature steady and the incubator is literally taped shut, so I don't know why these 2 babies are having such a difficult time hatching out.

So, are turkeys "not very nice"? By the way, if the turkey isn't broody, do you usually eat the turkey eggs just like chicken eggs?

She's very friendly when she's not broody. If I go near her now she puffs up and hisses and looks 10 times her size so I haven't got close enough to see if she's bluffing.

First chick has hatched and a second egg is zipping!

The first baby looks like a light blue!

Still hoping for lots of splashes!

There are 7 other pipped eggs and 4 with nothing, yet.

I've got one poult hatched. 5 more have pipped, one still hasn't. Only 2 of the pips have started zipping, and they are going very slow. Hatch day for them isn't until tomorrow though, so I'm leaving them until morning at least.

If thats a turkey sitting on her nest she is not bluffing ...a good way to get flogged is to bother a turkey sitting on its nest, they are about the meanest bird around and are not afraid to attack.

I couldn't sleep, knowing those two chicks were struggling so long. I used to hold to the idea that if the chick can't make it out of the shell on it's own -it probably is weak or deformed and would die anyway. However, something told me different and I knew there was no stopping once I intervened. I got out of bed at 11 PM and put to work the plan that had been developing in my mind.

- I got a washcloth warmed up with warm water. Then, I carefully opened up the window above the egg and let the washcloth hang over the side. First I just snipped the 2 membrane pieces that seemed to be holding the egg shut, but the top still wouldn't budge. Next, I grabbed the egg, closed the window and put the washcloth over the top of the window. Then I set the egg in another warm washcloth and realized that the little egg had a bunch of membrane strips all around. The shell had been cracked, but the membrane only had slits in it. It might as well have been iron bars keeping the chick inside the egg! Once I cut all the membrane off, the chick was placed back inside the incubator. I watched about 10 minutes and the chick was active and fine.
- I warmed up the washcloth again and opened up the other window and let it hang over the side. The other chick had pipped the shell and started zipping in a downward spiral only about one inch long. It had been stuck in the last spot over 10 hours. I grabbed the egg and closed the window. I had to pick alot of the shell away for this chick. It peeped faintly so I knew it was alive. I tore away the membrane from it's face first and realized right away that it's head was upside down and it had probably been confused. The poor thing was so exhausted that it stayed in that curled up position for awhile. I carefully laid it back in the carton. It's feet looked huge and discolored and I wondered if it had pecked at its feet or had a deformity. It actually flopped around a little with curled up feet...but it seemed to gain the will to live with each second.
-I didn't sleep good and at 2:30 AM I got up to check on the 2 chicks I'd helped. They were both doing fine and I couldn't tell the apart from the others.
smile.png

-But, I noticed that the other zipper hadn't made ANY progress since I had intervened with the others. I figured I had sacrificed that one to rescue the other 2.

But like I said, I knew I wouldn't stop once I influenced this chain of events.

OK -I put another warm washcloth into the window and picked up the partially zipped egg. I went ahead and continued opening up the egg and could see that the membrane had become hard and dry. (Probably from me opening up the window before?) This chick was still peeping faintly, but clearly exhausted. It had also been zipping in a downward direction but had gotten over half way around and then stopped for 5 hours. Maybe it had been resting and would have started again...I don't know. But I wanted to help it if it was my fault. I wrapped the little chick in a dry baby washcloth and put it in y shirt for a few minutes. Then I put it back in the incubator in the egg carton and it just laid it's head down on it's chest. Another chick came over to it and laid it's head down on it's tummy.
I finally went to bed.

The good news is, when I got up there are 9 fuzzy chicks laying or walking around the bator and I can't tell the ones I helped apart from the earlier ones.
big_smile.png
I think I did the right thing helping them. I don't know if some membranes are just tougher than others or some chicks just get confused, but I know that they are fine now. If I hadn't helped, I believe they would have died in their shells.

And another cool thing is that there's another pip.
fl.gif
Then there are 3 eggs that haven't done anything, but I'm not touchin' nothin'......I promise!

Yay! Good job.

I've got 3 poults in the brooder, 1 in the incubator still, and 3 starting to slowly zip eggs left in the incubator. Think all 7 will hatch, which I don't think is bad out of 8 shipped eggs.
celebrate.gif

I moved 6 babies into the brooder and 4 chicks are still in the incubator. There are also 3 eggs in the incubator which I'm hoping to see some pips from.

Are you ready for some cuteness? Everytime I incubate, the babies seem to get more and more adorable.
Here are the first 6:

And, this is the tiniest, cutest little thing. Please, please, please be a girl!

That's why she gets to sit on her infertile eggs. I'd rather deal with a blown up rotten egg then her right now, so she can stay. Wonder what she'll do when she see's my poults.

How weird, my other post disappeared?
The silkies are absolutely adorable. I can't wait until my silkies give up on trying to mother the sizzles EE chicks and lay me some eggs.

I am loving my poults. I forgot they actually have a really cute stage before they start getting ugly.

Wow, I would never have realized they are turkeys...they are cute!
love.gif
I saw some turkeys at the feed store...and they looked just like chickens. Did all 7 poults hatch yet? I put all 10 silkies in the brooder and they are SO SLEEPY. I've still got 3 eggs in the bator that I don't want to give up on yet.
fl.gif
(Might candle tonight to see if there is any movement, but I sure wish they would just pip and hatch on their own.)
