Set eggs 5-12 Looking for hatching buddies

Well, I candled my eggs again. This time with the kids so they could see. One little egg doesn't look too hopeful to me. I thought I saw some veining yesterday, but today I'm not too sure. All the others are coming along nicely with the embryo clearly visible. Some of the eggs already have a good sized air sac. Some don't. Is this okay that their air sac are already large?

I just candled mine and about 9 out of the 12 look perfect! i have an issue with one though.... the shell is cracked at the small end but there is definite veining and movement and i can see the eye and a nice size air sac... what should i do?

I read somewhere on this forum to seal the crack with wax. You might try that.

Welcome! Hope everything goes well.

I am up for the challenge! This is my very first time to hatch. Borrowed a still bator from a friend. Set it up for a few days to make sure heat was steady and put eggs in on 5/10. Tried to candle yesterday and my light just wasn't enough. Today I checked out THIS very info site for suggestions and found an easy made candling box. Modified with what resources I had of course! It worked great!!!!!!
Out of 18 eggs on day 7:
2- I am pretty sure have the red ring of death
4- are a little questionable
12 are definitely ALIVE

I am as they say here " Very Eggsited".
Good hatching to everyone!

Since a dog wiped out my whole flock of 10 layers and 2 roosters, we have had to start over.
I told my son to stop by the feed store and see if they had any RIR. He called and no RIR's and started naming off what they did have. BO, BR, SL, Polish Crested..... I told him to get 3 -4 of each of the good layers. My sister has a Polish rooster, and my friend had a Polish hen, so I told him to get about 6 or so of them (straight run) and they could get mates for theirs and maybe a pair for me. He misunderstood!!!!!!!! Thought I said 10. As there was 16 he got all of them???? Well, something about that first chick buying set something off in his brain. It created a chick-aholic. 3/30/12, He came home with; 16 Polish(SR), 3 Buff Orphington(SR), 3 Australorp(Pullets), 4 Barred Rock(Pullets), and 6 Rare Breed(SR). About every 10 days since, he has picked up 10 or so. He finally decided he had better quit. AND, what do I do? Mothers Day I had to get horse feed and they had Buff Orphington pullets and New Hampshire Red pullets on sale for $1.75. Had to have 5 of each! Not to mention the 5 laying hens an elderly lady decided she could no longer take care of,2 lorps, 1RIR, 1 Aracauna, and a Barred. She kept the rooster for dumplings she said. So, later that week he managed to find a Barred rooster. Since; named Flogger! We waited over a week to make sure the eggs would be fertile and started saving up. That is what is in the bator now, so they will be mix breeds and will go in the freezer. Most of them are pointy shells anyway and I understand they will probably be roosters. 6 out of the 18 eggs are green and the rest are tinted.
Instead of the old cat lady, folks are going to start calling me the old chicken lady. P.S I only have one cat!

My home made candler. Box lined with foil inside, and a hole in each end. One hole in the bottom, stuck over a lamp and low watt fluorescent bulb, and one hole at the top to candle eggs. Not pretty, but very effective!

I might be too late to join this hatch but i would love to join.
its my First hatch ever.

My eggs are due to come today but so far havent shown up.(BOO)

I wanted to cut my odds of total failure down so i bought the Hovabator with the fan and hydrometer? for temp and humidity and egg turner.
It all seems pretty tricky to me
I have had the bator & fan going for 4 daysand the temp changes every hour and only for a short period was 99.5.The humidity rarely is 40 (isnt it supposed to be 40?).Either too high or too low. Was told not to change the setting any more often than once every 8 hours as i was fiddling every hour..

About opening the bator ...A trick from the lady i bought the eggs from for the styrofoam bators. Put a hole in it as big as a straw hole and stick a straw in it.
(She used iv tubing) then I clamped it shut with a pinch type clothes pin when not needed I Added water with a large puppy feedling syringe so dont have to open the bator for humity ajustment

Now lets just see how the eggs like it if they ever get here !!

HOPE to JOIN!!!
