Set eggs 5-12 Looking for hatching buddies

i candled mine again last night and pulled one that was cracked a little, (but i had caught early on and sealed it with candle wax), but it was totally clear and infertile... all 11 others look great and i hope they stay like this!

If anyone has advice for a first time duck hatcher please let me know. Thanks!!

Ok, major egg emergency! I was turning the eggs about ten-ish minutes ago, and i wanted to candle an egg that i thought i had turned upside down, meaning that the air bubble was pointing down. Stupid me, i knocked the flashlight into the bator!

One egg shattered(thankfully the dead one) but 2 others cracked!!

I put medical tape over one small crack in the shell on one of the eggs, but the other one looked like it dented! There is a crater in the egg! But when i candled the eggs a few minutes after the accident, the chicks inside were moving around like they always do! I dont want to throw away an egg with a live chick inside, especially if it will hatch ok! Im only 6 days away from my hatch date! What can i do!!!!!!!!!

Oh no! I don't know anything about that. Maybe you shoudl start a new thread in the incubating area.

Seems like that sort of tape would be a good idea. I would worry about other tapes and anything that would transfer chemicals into the egg. I wonder how pure melted wax would work to seal up cracks? You'd just want to be careful not to cover anything but the cracked area. Hope they are okay!

PS: Just googled it, and I guess using pure melted wax to seal over dents on damaged eggs is a common practice in aviculture, and accepted as the best way to fix them. Just make sure it is 100% pure and not some sort of scented candle wax with harmful chemicals!

I sealed one with pure beeswax once, and it didn't grow any bacteria. The chick didn't develop either (I think it was infertile because our temps were 114 at the time), but it didn't grow bacteria. That's something, right?

I had one that was about that bad the last batch I set. I just put a small piece of packing tape over it so it did not loose too much moisture. it pipped just find and the only problem we had was we had to help it along a little and it took too long coming out so when hubby went to check it the little guy was stuck to the membrane and he had to run warm water over it to get it unstuck. Chick is doing fine so far. its been almost 3 weeks now.

I candled my eggs again...I can't seem to help myself.

Anyway, one of them looked strange. It has an air cell in the big end and has veins, but there is a light colored circle about the size of a quarter about halfway down the side of the egg. All the dark matter, the yolk and other stuff, looks like it has settled down against the air cell. There isn't a bold red outline to this circle. It almost looks like a bubble, but it doesn't move. Any ideas? Oh, and the egg is on day 8.

I was just listening to Peter Brown, an avian vet on the Chicken Whisperer's radio show and he said that there's two periods where you definitely should not handle the eggs because they're at a critical period of development. He said four days and nine days you shouldn't mess with them. Other than that, have the eggs been turned properly? It almost sounds like the embryo might be stuck there?
