Set eggs today, 2/6/10. Who's with me?

Getting excited here. Broodies still sitting and keeping eggs cozy and warm. I tried candling again and saw what I think is life inside a few of the eggs. 2 eggs I'm not sure about but I'll leave it to the girls and just take them out later if they don't hatch. I would've never of guessed I'd be expecting chicks to hatch in our coop with a blizzard about to happen. It's snowing now and about 30 degrees. What a contrast, blizzard outside, warm broody hens inside about to welcome new life into the world. Ah, priceless.

Candled last night and put all the eggs on lockdown.

I ended up with a day off from work due to snow today. I think I have looked in the bator about 25 times this morning for early pippers.

Being my first time hatching I'm hoping all goes well. When are they suppose to pip? I'd better start watching because the bator I have is small and I plan on pulling them out as it gets crowded. It's snowing here in NY. Hope we don't loose power.

you don't want to be "pulling them out as it gets crowded"... they need to stay in the incubator for at least 12-24 hrs after hatching to dry off and rest, plus it is hard to avoid even a temporary drop in humidity when you open the lid and that can cause later chicks to get stuck in their shells/membranes. It is really best to leave them in there til they are ALL done and ready to be transferred to the incubator. Yes, they will be tripping over each others' eggs (and each other) but it is not like they are trying to do a figure skating routine in there, they'll cope

You probably won't see any pips before sometime later in the 19th day, or later than that, but you never know. Obsessively checking the incubator is a fun hobby

(For me it is good exercise too as the 'bator is in the basement down some very steep stairs. I should calculate sometime how many calories I burn during a 3-wk incubation and the next week or two of chicks in a brooder down there... I bet it is several quarts of icecream's worth

)

OK thanks Pat. I have the Brinsea Eco and it's tiny. I thought as they hatched, dried off a bit I would pull them out. I will wait the 12-24 hrs you suggested.
Are you sure they won't try to skate? Maybe they'll be the missing link?

I love ice cream and hate steps...that equals trouble!

My first pip

I set on the 5th though, so that makes it day 20 for my first pip - my 4 year old grandaughter and I will be glued to this thing for the next few days.

I thought I heard very faint peeping this morning, but my husband said I was imagining it - he was wrong (it's very faint though - too insulated and the fan is going). I had a dream this morning that I woke up and they were all hatched (all black - wrong color).
