Set some eggs just now, due date 20th July.... anyone else setting just now? Hatch-Along

10maybe2: Thrilled to hear the good news! And you may find that some you can't see now, will be visible in the next day or so.

Heidisgran: Honestly I didn't think the little booger was going to make it. It was very weak when I checked on it as my husband left for work last night. I went to stick my head in on the ones I've already moved to the brooder and decided to check on number 4 in the bator. He was very vocal, moving around, and almost dry. It still had the part of the bottom of the egg attached to the umbilical cord. I warmed up the bathroom and took it in there and used a warm wet cloth to soften the membranes and began to slowly chip away at what was left of the egg.

So here's what we have now.

This was before I started removing shell and extra membrane.

Oh wow, it looks pretty good. The cord is white? Has it shrunk? Maybe you can take a pair of sterile scissors and trim it off so it doesn't get stepped on & pulled out? I'm not sure, the two that I had didn't look like that. It almost looked like they had guts hanging out so I'm thinking they were prolapsed.

I guess we'll see if the little one will make it past 48 hrs. fingers crossed !

I'm so glad that everyones hatch is moving along and producing babies :). Good job everyone! I've learned this time around that hatching is so simple that it is the hardest thing ever! In theory: egg + temp+ humidity + 21 days = chick. Nope! Egg + temp + humidity+ 20-who-knows + worry worry worry + last minute problems = chicks if you're lucky lol. Everyone is doing so well though congrats!

hahaha that's the bare bones truth about it.

My incubator is starting to take on a funny smell. Is it because of the eggs that have already hatched or am I possibly smelling eggs going bad in there. I've had no smell up until this morning. It's on day 23 and still waiting on 11 eggs. I'm sure they're not going to do anything. There's about three that I think MIGHT have fully developed chicks, but saw no movement last night when I candled.

I did clip the cord this morning. He is up and about. Not ready to come out of the bator yet though.

I had a funny smell in the incubator so I took out and candled the remaining 11 eggs. There were no signs of life at all. So I went ahead and did eggtopsy on them. I had three fully formed chicks that were already dead. Four that were embryos. And the rest were not fertile. No signs of veins and all. I'm very glad I didn't wait until day 25 to do it. My house probably would have stunk.
