Hi! I set some eggs in my homemade incubator on August 3rd and I'm expecting my hatch date to be on August 23rd! I built a homemade incubator from a really nice styrofoam cooler and the temperature is holding nicely. I am however, having a lot trouble with the humidity. Last night it was too high (around 62-65%), so I made a few adjustments like removing most of the sponge. This morning, the humidity is too low (around 45%), so I added just a tiny bit more water and I'm waiting, but nervous because I have to be at work all day. I'm also noticing a bad odor when I open the incubator to turn the eggs. I've heard this can mean a rotten egg. How can I know which one is the "bad egg"? This is my first time ever incubating and I'm new to the chicken world! This is my first summer ever owning a chicken! Help me please anyone! Thanks!

I've finally got my incubator figured out and the thermometer is reading 100* I know it's not 99.5 but it's as close as I'll be able to get with these controls. lol.

I attempted to candle the other day but I think it was too soon for some of the eggs. On two of them I could definately see veins! Two more I could faintly see them. One egg I candled, the light pretty much went straight through it so I think that one's a no go. The rest of the eggs are dark on the fat end and the darkness moves slightly when I shift the egg.

That's jus the light colored eggs though. I can't see a whole lot on the brown eggs.

Anyone know if there's a reference sheet on here anywhere about what you should see when you candle on certain days?

i walked in the room with the incubator and it smelled awful. i smelled every egg and found out which one it was i throw it out quick! that was myt first bad egg and now i know what they mean.

I set mine Aug 3 and 4th i think i have about 30 or so in the turner and im candling them next Sat

copy, paste won't work. It has to have all this coding stuff to work on a forum like this. Use photobucket.com. that's what I use.

im a little upset with the shipped eggs (Silkies) not the americauna. i ordered an assortment of colors, buff, white, splash, black, cuckoo, blue, and partridge. and my favorite colors are white, splash, and partridge, and of corse with my luck non of my fav colors seemed to developed and so now im left with cuckoo, buff, and black. so i guess im going to have to order more so i can get the colors i want
