Setting 3doz eggs tomorrow 8/11!!! Hatching buddies???

I'm all for what is the least expensive and works. Can't have dropped eggs! ( we need a new smiley. It looks just like an egg yolk, so imagine a circle of whites with a smily in the center . . . )

I just incubate on a budget, so I do what is easy and inexpensive. I leave the spendy part to buying the eggs and food.

I candled about half the eggs tonight, day6. THe eggs were instorage for a long time because the one incubator I had was in use already. Realistically I knew eggs do not wait well after 10 days. It certainly contributed to many clears and many blood rings. Saw maybe 3-4 that are in good shape; and the last 3 eggs set look good too, but after all they were the freshest.

Lost the hen earlier this week, so I really feel crummy that most of these eggs will not hatch. Ah, Hope , had hoped I would have a better hatch inspite of the old age of the eggs. Good experience see the blood rings--1 very good one, 2 good enough to recognize. A good lesson on setting fresh eggs.

Sorry about your hen, hope you get some good hatches!

I did a sneak peek on a couple of my eggs last night when I was setting up a candling box contraption... I think I have something that works out pretty good, but at Day 5 on the three eggs I checked, I couldn't see any veining. They had large dark masses in them, much larger than when I candled them pre-incubation. I'm not sure what that means, but they've certainly changed. Any ideas? When I actually candle them all tonight or tomorrow morning, I'll take pictures.

I recandled t night, in light of the number of clears and blood rings thought removal may be the best thing to avoid any bombs.

Removed a lot of eggs--8; some I think have quit but were dark enough to question candling results. So I put them back in and will recheck at next candling. 6 turkey eggs looked good and 5 more are maybes. THe 12 chicken eggs are good, only 1 clear.

THis is all for practice anyway; need to track down a new hen or 2.

I candled all of mine due tuesday, and tossed a bunch to make room in the bator. The obvious clears of course or the obvious quitters. Then I decided to do an early lockdown... Moved them to the hatcher, since I had it ready.

I'm planning to candle today, and take pics, will post.... I'm very nervous. I don't like the idea of an egg bomb, but these are the only chickens I will have when they hatch. Not to mention the expense of buying and shipping these nice chicken eggs. I would hate to throw any out that I'm not sure on. As my first time incubating, I'm only guessing. Oh, what to do, what to do.... I'll sit here and think about it until I'm brave enough to candling them.

I did it!!! It is now the beginning of Day 7 and I recandled all of the eggs. Most were clear or didn't show much shadowing in the egg, very much like they were the day I put them in the incubator. A couple show bloodrings. And there were a few that are very promising with great veining! I'm scared to toss out any eggs, for fear I might throw out one that will develop. I paid good money for these eggs and these are my only chickens I'll have, so I'm not taking the decision lightly. I do however want to toss out any "bomb threats". Since so many of the clear eggs looked the same, I didn't post a picture of each of the eggs, but about half of them are shown here:

I did number the eggs and put descriptions to each picture with my observations.
