MjChickens, nope, no fan.

I was given 2 incubators last year from the school districts science department (they GAVE them to me and told me to keep them! Woohoo!) One was the regular ol' hova-bator, no egg turner, not fan. The other one...well I can't remember what it is but it's old. It does have a fan and an automatic egg turner (but doesn't work all that great). I have some eggs in that one at school right now, so I am bringing home the hova-bator to use on these new eggs. Don't really have the funds to purchase an egger turner or fan at the moment (and not sure if my local feed store carries the fan kits).

The fan makes a BIG difference in the humidity during lockdown and your hatch rate should go way up. Instead of paying $50 for the fan kit. I bought a PC fan for and couple bucks and put in it. You just need someone that knows how to install in properly. Good thing my Husbands that stuff.

I had a hatching party last night as well. I was concerned about this. iI unplugged the wrong bator 10 daysago for 10 hrs or so. I did have 4 ew quit , but locked down a bunch. They started were supposed to hatch friday, and My one line of wellies are always earl. so I waited an extra day to lock down. 1 wellie pipe in my hand as I moved them from bator to hacther. That was kinda a funny feeling. But My Line 1 wellies all hatched out friday afternoon and last night, except the early piped on. He was out friday morning. Th other line of wellies have 2 out right now and the other pipped, I have 1 project blue barnevelder out, and cant see if the other one is pipped. I have 5 or 6 black coppers out and can't see how many blue and blue splash coppers out, It is a moving mess in that tray. I can see a couple are piped and couple zipping. Now if my easter hatch goes , I will be happy . That bator has an electronic controller on it and did not like the storm the other day. It was kinda like stuck and flcikering. The temp was up to 113, but the egg temp therm was correct. I did candle a few and found no clears and they were deveopling right on schedule, so hope I did not fry to many of them. I shut the controloer off, turned it back on and its working fine.

Are those wood pellets you have the chicks on? How does that work for you? What is the advantage? Cost?

It is animal bedding pellets. I only use them in the brooder. I don't think that they are cost effective for the coop. They work well for chicks because you know how they get with water and making messes, the pellets absorb it very well. Here on the west coast they are about $5 bag.
