I almost had a heart attack!

Penelope, Primrose Mum and Dad all out scratching around for oats...
wow!

Mine did the same thing. That's what they do. We all think OH No we can't give chicks nothing but chick starter, not so, as you can see above. As soon as everyone is dry and fluffed they are out looking for treats with momma. They are adorable. I have to broodies right now, Ms. Cruella who hatched on the 16th and Ms Tess who has been trying to hatch babies all summer she has 3 silkie eggs, well 2 now YEAH she finally did it she hatched one, and no thanks to Ms Cruella who keeps trying to push her out of her nest, up until today, she didn't budge and now has a baby. I about had a heart attack when I went out to lock everyone up, 2 hens and 5- 2week old chicks and a broken egg shell on the ground I thought for sure I was going to have a dead silkie. But no she was not moving off her eggs, everyone in the coop was going crazy over these 2 broodies clucking at each other. Got things back to normal and everyone in different nesting boxes and still holding out hope for 2 more to hatch.

Wow you have a lot going on! I have been outta my mind with the one broody and 2 peeps! It's a cinch I am going to need to take this slow. My ticker can barely take all the excitement!

Well it's official, 16 live chicks. One died this afternoon, I think the others took it out and I had to 'dispatch' the crippled little guy but my other problem chick is doing great and thriving now it would appear.

Good luck babigyrl22, hope you have some by now.

Love that she had those babes outside Rachel'sFlock! That's awesome, I can't wait till one of my broody's actually gets the job done.

...so I did do an egg autopsy this afternoon, I had a feeling they were all dead and for once I was right. I think my problem was too high of humidity. I had 9 that were fully formed, no internal pip, huge airsack and no yoke absorbed...so I am gonna try to correct that with my next batch. Half hatched on Day 20 also so I plan to turn down the temp a smidge to avoid that again.

I have the incubator running right now as I want to prep it to load one more batch this weekend then I've promised myself I'm done for the year. I've moved it to a new room (renos) and it's sitting at about 25 - 30% humidity with no water in it (I was between 35 - 40% for the first 18 this past time), do you think that's too low for the first 18? I wanted to only have it about 50% come lockdown cause the second anyone hatches it spikes up to 80 - 90% so I don't know if that was my problem when I started at 65-70% at lockdown this past time. Your thoughts? I figure I should try something different since I only got just over 50% of my eggs to hatch.

Is anyone else going again right away?

thanks! but no

....eggs have settled down so maybe when I wake up I will have SOMETHING?

I set my eggs later in the day so maybe that is why it just seems so long. Of course this is my first hatch ever and it could be a complete failure.

If I get one chick.... I will be happy.

Prior to this year, i always had my broodies hatch chicks, but raised them indoors because i have a lot of predators, and i just didn't trust the other chickens not to mess with them. I give the chicks greens, bugs, veggies, fruit from day one....just not tooo much.

Yesterday morning i candled my two lonely eggs, one was internally pipped (cool!), the other seemed ok. Waited all day for a pip or a peep...nothin...;~( Thought i must've screwed up again....came home from work this am, that egg was almost zipped, the little bugger was out by the time i made eggs and toast! how nice of him to wait for me!

I candled the other then, still nuthin....just woke up and peeked in, #1 is almost fluffed, #2 is pipped externally. They definitely keep their own schedules!

THe candler is a big help, well worth the investment.

They are back to wiggling again and one is wiggling alot. My friends and their kids are coming by this weekend. Maybe they are waiting until they get here to get the show on the road
