Hate to be morbid, but what is the preferred method to put down a suffering chick?
I ran my temps lower this time, closer to 99 average of 3 thermometers, and humidity around 40. I didn't raise humidity til the first one pipped internally, would've waited for external, but had to go to work. THe first one hatched clean and perky...this second one not so much...
The one that was pipped 630 yesterday morning was still there this morning...a really big piece of shell had come off with that pip, the hole in the membrane was small, the beak was still there 630 this am...i tried making a little zip to help, hit blood right away...sigh....
Went to bed, when i got up at 1100, he was still wiggling and peeping...ok...hands off. Half hour ago, i checked and he'd gotten a bigger hole in the membrane, but it was all white...just gently pushed on it to rip it and chickie started pushing, so went ahead and ripped it a little more, and he was right out, no attachments or blood, though the membrane was stuck to some feathers ...PHEW...i think it's a splash BLRW, a lot lighter than the first chick, even while still wet. Wish my PC wasn't such a POS so i could post pics. I can't even guess what a 30-hour, a little bit sticky hatch plus a quickie clean one means about my technique...come on broody hens!
Anyways, congrats to everyone on your hatch...and i feel for you all who lost babies, you never get used to being on that threshhold with any other creature. I'm a nurse, used to work in nursing homes, now i do home care with chronically ill kids and ventilator-dependent folks, have had all sorts of critters, death never gets any easier.
