Setting duck eggs on Saturday, 8/18 - Anyone wanna join? (Set by next Saturday for chicken eggs)

My aunt gave me eight duck eggs that her duck has been on for about a week today, to help make up for all the eggs I lost. Down to three Welsh Harlequin eggs today, officially. One of the eggs from my polish girl is really taking off - the others I'm iffy on. The silkie eggs are looking good, with maybe one not developing but it's hard to tell. We'll see how that goes. And:

I didn't hatch her - I just figured that this thread could use more cute chick pictures while we wait for our hatches. She came in the mail today with these guys:

I only kept her and a leghorn. Everyone else was slated for a different home. Gotta love splitting hatchery orders!
What is she? I see a top knot and beard like a silkie, but it doesn't have black skin..... She's very cute. I am intrigued.

She's a sultan. Well, guys, for no reason known to man, my incubator temp spiked, and stayed there long enough to make the water wiggler read 113 degrees. I know for sure that the eggs from my polish girl are dead, and probably everything else is too, but they're harder to candle so I have to wait till dark to see. My only course of action now is probably to order more Welsh Harlequin eggs and see how I do with round two...I will be taking some of the remaining eggs under my silkie to hatch so I will have a hatch with you guys but I'm really devastated here. I paid over $40 for those Welsh Harlequin eggs, only to have them all have really bad air cells, most have bacterial contamination, and all but three die, and now I probably lost those guys too. The duck eggs I got from my aunt have probably died too, if they were fertile. Not a good day here.

Well, I ordered more eggs from Metzer. They should be here by Friday, and they'll go in on Saturday. I'll be two weeks behind with these eggs but what can I do? I might have one still alive from the first batch, but probably not. I'm really devastated over here and I'm just so glad I had my silkie sitting on most of the silkie eggs. I think one of the ones I had in the incubator was bad anyway, so I really only lost three there. Plus I can scavenge up some of my polish girl's eggs and set those with the duck eggs, so I guess it's not a total loss. I'll just be behind where I was. The new duck eggs cost me over $70, though. Probably because I learned my lesson and ordered a full 20 this time. I'm also borrowing a 'real' incubator to put them in, instead of my homemade one. I don't feel particularly trusting of it right now...

Sorry for your loss!! That does suck. Hopefully your next batch will turn out better! What kind of a thermostat do you have in your incubator?

It's one that has a probe and is used to maintain very exact temperatures in a reptile habitat. I have no idea what happened. It was working perfectly. I turned the bulb off immediately after the spike to try to salvage the eggs - pretty sure I failed - and when I turned it back on the thing worked perfectly again. Not sure if I want to use the Little Giant I now have and try to rig a fan up in there or if I just want to stick with my homemade one. It may have just been my error - I forgot to check the temp after turning the eggs last night and I may have bumped the probe into a location that caused it to read lower than the actual temperature. I woke up and the incubator was wayyyy too hot. Now that I fiddled with everything, it's perfect again. I really just don't know :idunno

What would you guys do? f I lose another batch of eggs and am out $70 on top of the other money I lost, I might just give up.

dont give up

i have lost hundreds of pounds and that ecuates to times 1.5 in dollars

buying eggs and failing on the hatch

i purchased atleast 100 eggs in the last 6 months and only have 3 chicken to show for it that actually hatched along with 1 duck

of which 1 has to be culled as its disabled another is a cockrel but thats ok as i was hoping for a biy as its an asil and the last is a pullet and not one i can use to breed as the seller said its a buff orp but now fully feathered its a lemon cuckoo orp

i payed £10-12 per 6 so work that out

never give up as now i use my own eggs and i get 100% hatch and even if i loose the eggs they wher emine so i just collect more and try again

I can understand you being upset on lossing money but I can also tell you enjoy hatching your own eggs cause of your post. I know if it was me I would not give up. But I'm hard headed so I would keep trying till I get it right.......This trait drives my wife CRAZY
