Setting Eggs 1/19 - Hatching Buddies

Gah. Out of the eight eggs I have, only four are developing. (I have a candling addiction. LOL I was looking at one of my seramas today and it was moving around like crazy! I've never seen them so active early on!) It appears that none of the Japanese bantam eggs I got were fertile. :/ None of them are showing any signs of life at all. If there's nothing on Saturday I'm going contact the breeder... Kinda bummed about it. Pretty excited over the seramas though! All three are developing very well, along with the mixed breed bantam egg the breeder gave me as a freebie.

Too bad about the Japanese bantams... but how exciting to see the lively movement on the Seramas!!! Hopefully you can get a replacement on the bantams.

OK couldn't wait.. LOL ended up candling.. out of 18 eggs, 12 show potential. The white ones are definite clears no growth seen at all. The dark shelled eggs I can definitely see some veins in a few of them others I can just see a change in what the egg looked like from pre-setting. Interesting enough one of the eggs with good veining has a hairline crack that I did not notice on initial candling. It's along the side of the egg as it has good veins I patched it up with some nail polish I'll have to monitor it from now on.. Air cells look right on target so my humidity in the 50's seems to be working out well for this incubator. Not going to candle again till probably day 14th just to recheck on the patched egg and the clears.. So far better success than with the shipped eggs not expecting 100% fertility as it's winter..

Oh, I hope your patched-up shell hangs in there for you!

Good luck I had a short power outage today

2 hours out but I put a hot water baggy in the incubator and kept a blanket around it was only in the 80's for twenty minutes while I got the temp back up. Going on candle on Saturday fingers crossed

My hen has actually got off her clutch to eat/drink and layed back on the wrong set of eggs. By the time I found them they were cold , as she was in coop and the temp was in high 30's/low 40's. I picked the hen up and put her back on the right set of eggs. When I went asking for advice on if the eggs would fine, I was told to take them to my garden and crush them in the soil. I couldn't do it and I thought I'd allow her to sit on them until they were due to hatch and if they didn't , go from there.Long story short, every single egg hatched and they are all fine.=)
I'm sure your babies will be fine too.

Mental note when candling an egg be sure homemade candler is secure..

Decided to recheck the cracked egg that I patched yesterday, I made up a candler to see if I could see veining any better.. Well I could see the veining much better everything looked AWESOME then I turned away slightly to try to block the light let my hand go off and CRASH goes the candler.. stupid stupid stupid..

Needless to say humpty dumpty cannot be put back together again..

Day 7 on my shipped silkie eggs. Candled them a bit ago. 9 of 13 showing veins and even movement! Not one has a decent air cell. At least half are saddle cells and all are pretty large and wobbly. I haven't been turning them so I guess this is as good as they're going to get! I will start turning them now....I guess side to side but basically upright in a carton till lockdown? Then on their side to hatch? I hope at least some survive! Good luck everyone!

I set 25 eggs on the 20th. They are mix between all my flock. I candled on day 3 and 5 were showing veins but those were white eggs. Not sure about the brown pretty hard to tell at this point. There was alot of the eggs very porous tho. I keep my incubator inbetween 30 and 50% day 1-18 then bump it up to around 70% on the last 3 days.

That sucks, but it happens to us all at some point...

So how did everyone's candling go? I took pictures, but I need to wait until my phone's battery charges before I can put them on the computer. >_< As I suspected, the Japanese bantams are infertile. They are showing no signs of life. :( The other four are doing marvelous though. I took a video of one of the seramas! It's not the easiest thing to see, but you can see veining and the embryo at some times.
