I have two blue mottled, a black mottled and another Mille Fleur out! That's 7 chicks! I have 3 pips and 8 eggs doing nothing yet.

The one pipped has been pipped all day - the one in the pic w/ the big hole. The hole is a bit bigger, but it isn't zipping. Should I be concerned at how long it's taking it to zip? I mean, it's been over 12hrs. Sorry if I sound like a worry wart...

Well my last chick hatched during the night, it was still wet when i got up at 5 this morning. So here are all 10 little fuzzies, cute little chipmunks.

The sure are cute, most of them are zipping around. I am worried about one chick, though, its is having problems with its feet and legs. It can't seem to keep its feet under itself, one foot is forever up by its ears, and its feet are keeping the toes closed like putting all your fingers into one hole in your glove and the foot seems to pronate. I have bandaids on its feet, which is spreading the toes, but it is still pronating. I am beginning to fear I will have to cull this one.

I have never had one hatch with these kinds of problems before. My tender hearted ten year old will be crushed if I have to cull one.

I haven't seen Melissa Rose lately, how are your eggs/chicks? How many are still hatching?

They are adorable, Just2rosey! I hope the one with the feet issues straightens out for you.

I have 9 hatched total now. That leaves 9 more to go. I only see one pip, but technically today is day 19 until around 10pm, so they are still early and have time to hatch.

I am still worried about the one w/ the large pip hole (hole is big enough for it's head to fit through). It's been like that for over 24hrs and it is not zipping. It's breathing and I can see it moving, but it is just not coming out. I don't want to help it out if I don't have to. What should I do?

I wouldn't panic yet, sometimes they pip but aren't truly ready to hatch. When they do this they just hang out for a day or so before they finish. Remember they don't need to eat for a coupld of days, so if it is breathing it is ok for now. When and if I decide to help, I slowly pic off just the shell and don't mess with the inner membrane. Exam it carefully, do you see veins? If you do wrap the egg in a damp paper towel and put it back, the chick isn't ready. If you break a vein helping the chick can bleed out very quickly. At this point I usually put them back in the incubator wrapped in the damp paper towel and wait several hours to see it they can get out themselves. If they don't progress, then I will help further after I can no longer see veins, sometimes they are shrink wrapped. If there are veins, then the yolk sack also may not be fully absorbed. Most often when I have helped the real problem has been my impatience, not that the chick was in trouble. I lost one to bleeding out last year, and I helped one that had serious internal problems and died later (it didn't seem to be able to digest food). I wished I had never helped it later. Along with this you have to weigh the fact that everytime you open the incubator to help this chick you will be putting the others at risk. If any others are pipped, then they could end up shrink wrapped if you lose humidity. I know how anxious a body can get over this, I am the queen of hatching anxiety. Good luck, I hope the chick comes out ok and that the rest of your chicks hatch successfully.
