Setting eggs 4/27! Who's with me!!!

Rachels sorry I have been to Texas, maybe it was the wrong time of the year, but when I got out of the car the area I was at everything was covered with millions of Japanese beetles omg they were everywhere, my chickens would love it there:)

Must have been, I don't even know what those are

! The only time I hate it here is in the Summer. Have lived here all my life and still have not adapted to 100+ temps.

So I candled last night (day 8), out of the 16 Serama's set, 6 were clear, 2 had blood rings and 8 look good

. I have not tossed any yet, but will check them on Thursday and toss all 8 if nothing changed. Did not candle the other eggs since I just set them on Friday.

Okay, I figured it out. You are talking about June Bugs!!!! Yes, those are everywhere. I looked up Japanese Beetles and it seems the are cousins, but we don't have an infestation here yet. Looks like mostly along the Eastern Coast states.

Yes, June Bugs are everywhere in the summer, but only at night and around lights. They are harmless, but I can't stand it when they get on me, there legs are prickly. Yep, the chickens LOVE them as grubs, but since they only come out at night they don't get to eat many of them as adults. Just the ones that don't fly off by morning time.

They are also incredibly stupid. They fly into the same window over and over again, knock them self out, then when they "come to" they do it again. As long as they don't land on me, they are pretty funny to watch. Also, when they land on their backs, it is super hard for them to flip over, so that is funny to watch also.

Japanese Beatles are very bad here in N.C. I was treating my yard, but none of my neighbors do, so I gave up, waste of time, the chickens do a pretty good job, last year I had 2 Tom turkeys and they loved those beatles

So tomorrow will be the one week mark for my eggs and I am going to candle them all to figure out if they are developing. I have only ever checked one egg and tomorrow I will be doing the whole batch (10). What are the best ways to go about doing this without disturbig the broody hen too much? I will also be marking them with sharpie and possibly taking pics so i figure about 5 minutes per egg maybe. If anyone could tell me how they do it, or just give any advice in gneneral that would be great! Thanks!

Sorry, I have never used a broody, but GOOD luck!

I don't think I would mark them with a sharpie, I just use a pencil, I would not want the ink from sharpie getting in to the egg, I have a broody hen, I just reach under her and get an egg she just gives me a little low squeal and then she is fine, she will not move for anyone, but I have a RIR that is trying to brood and she pecks the heck out of my hand but I take her eggs away bc I already have 2 hens brooding and I don't need anymore chicks

oh just won another 6 Shidhi Asils fom Ebay

payed

£56 for them

but then they are Shindi so if the seller is honest and they are what they say then that's a bargain

even in Shind you can't get birds that cheap
