Ok I have a question, one of my eggs one that would be on day 9 looks odd I can no longer see the embryo due to veins and a "black mass" forming around the entire egg. Is this normal? ( Its my first time hatching and candling eggs)
Do you have another incubator to hatch in? If you set eggs on different days, they will hatch on different days...Thank you for that texasmja! It was a real help! It seems to look like around day 12 to 13 but I didn't think I put it in that early! Also since I have diffrent levels of development in most of my eggs due to eggs being put in at diffrent times, would that interfer with my other eggs?
I don't have an extra bator either, and did the same thing. I set 7 eggs on the 9th, 1 yesterday and 1 more today. I'm really hoping that since the last egg I put in is only a little more than a full day behind that it'll be ok. I'm also trying hatching in cartons this time. When I've incubated before I just laid them on the wire, and then when the first chicks hatched they were kicking the other eggs all over the place. It's also made it much easier to turn them without fear of dropping them (which I seem to to do every. single. timeNo I don't its the only one I have. The only reason I've set eggs on diff days is because I only have two hens laying.is there a way that I can hatch and still incubate?![]()
I use cartons when I hatch mine. I cut the carton down a little and make a hole in the bottom. I just find it easier to turn them that way. When lock down comes I move mine out of the cartons and lay them dowm on some paper towels.I don't have an extra bator either, and did the same thing. I cut holes in the bottom so air could flow thru. Goodness me I hope something hatches!!!!!!!!!![]()

Is there any particular reason you take them out of the cartons before lockdown? I was going to just leave them in the cartons the whole way thru so that the newly hatched chicks can't go bowling with the ones who are still working on getting out. Plus, I'm kind of hoping it might make clean up a tad easier too. I had way more eggs the last time I incubated, and the mess after hatching was horrendous (plus my incubator is styrofoam, so I can't do any kind of scrubbing on it). Just curious and trying to figure out what might work a little better.....I use cartons when I hatch mine. I cut the carton down a little and make a hole in the bottom.
