Setting eggs, anyone want to join me? Hatch-Along

Don't worry, it happens. But next time leave the eggs until day 14 unless you are positive they are clear or you think they are going bad.

The chick probably had some sort of inborn error causing problems with growth and most likely wouldn't have made it to hatch anyway.

Could it have just been the pattern of the veins? It could be that it just hadn't died yet too. How many days behind did it look? If it was way behind it probably wouldn't have made it anyway...could have been anything.
I had an egg like that. I "saw" a bloodring and made a "mental note" to myself to throw it out. Well, I never did, and it hatched!

My brahma girl gave me another egg today so I dated it an added it too,...

Love reading all these post. My hen started laying just before the new year. I took the first 4 eggs and set them on the 1st and I know 2 are developing They are royal palm turkey eggs and very excited. This is my first hatch. I have some questions though. How long should I leave them in the incubator when they hatch (I'm hoping that at least the 2 will hatch) and what's the best way to deal with them after that. I have read a lot but want to here what has worked for you all here.

Hello, and welcome aboard! I leave chicks in the incubator until they are fluffy and cute :) then remove them and place them in the brooder with their heat lamp so they can stay toasty warm. I haven't had to brood many turks myself (my hens usually took care of that), but I made some observations about the ones I did keep inside:
- baby turkeys aren't the smartest creatures on the planet, they seem to have problems finding food and water. IMO, they do better if they chicken chicks to show them where everything is. So, if you can, it would be a great idea to set some chicken eggs with them (they'd be set 7 day after the turkey eggs).
- poults are very sensitive to temp, so when you think they've been under the heat long enough, keep them there a little longer. People always told me "poults are so dumb, they'll stand out in the rain, look up and drown themselves!". Again, my opinion, but birds that aren't feeling well will kind of hunch and look up, so I think they just get cold and die from that. So when you do put them outside, a covered run might benefit them greatly.
Other than that, I treated them just like chicks and they did fine. Good luck, keep us updated on your progress!

I started 22 eggs on Friday the 11th. The rooster is a Blue Orpington and the girls are: one Blue Orp, three Buff Orps, three Speckled Sussex, four Light Brahmas. We'll see what we end up with!

How is everyone's hatch going? I am down to 9 eggs after my 7 day candling. The 6 shipped eggs were all clear. So I crack each one open, and yep nothing.

I'm sorry to hear about your 6 shipped eggs. But good luck on the rest! I have 9 left out of 10 one had developed a blood ring but when I cracked it, it was still alive. :( BUT I'm do for my first "lock down" to start on the 18th.) OH and if anyone is interested I'll have a dozen hatching egg's ready to ship on the 16th! Just PM me I'd hate to have to toss'em.

I had one that I thought was maybe a blood-ring, but it was veins, it hatched. I am super careful, I smell a suspect egg and make notes about development. If the others keep growing and one lags behind like it stopped then it probably died. But if it keeps growing I keep it in the incubator. You just never know sometimes, with all the veins.

Next time I'll just keep an eye one if it happens again. Me entire first batch did the whole blood ring thing and never smelled or weeped but never hatched but with this one I have 3 ready chicks that'll hopefully hatch! ( I have diffrent date groups in the same bator.) Hoping the other "2" batches make it through lock down unscathed!

In your first batch, did they grow and fill the egg up? I watch for growth, they grow so fast it is easy to tell if they start lagging behind the rest.
