Setting eggs, anyone want to join me? Hatch-Along

How's it going everyone?

My thirteen eggs get their fourteen day candling on Friday! So far all are developing. Two more days and I will know how well.

This is an important note for everyone. DO NOT open your incubator any more than you absolutely must. I candle only THREE times in 21 days. I DO NOT mess with the temp adjustment after the first 24 hours starting incubation. I DO NOT open the incubator during the lock down period. When you follow these simple (but oh so hard to follow) rules, you will have more hatched chicks.

I actually monitor mine via weight, so I candle candle and weigh on days 3, 7, 14, and 18 and bump back lockdown if necessary. Also, mother hens leave their nest once a day which allows the eggs to cool slightly, and research has shown that a daily cool down makes for stronger/healthier chicks.

I candled during lockdown too, but in the bathroom with a hot steamy shower going when I opened the bator and only to look for internal pips or expired chicks. It's really not as black and white as some people make it out to be.

I'm beginning to think it gave up.

About 4 of the 14 eggs are developing.

And tomorrow, I'll candle the two eggs I set yesterday.

I ended up with one lonely baby. It just happens to be the one that pipped internally and had some help getting out. It was also the tiniest egg. It's dad is a partridge silkie and mom is one if my buff Cochins. It shouldn't be lonely too long cause I've got more eggs due to hatch any day now. And it knows my voice and face.

How cute is that!!

I'm on day 2 of lock down. I've seen or heard nothing from them :( I've candled 3 times and for the most part I've kind of forgot them. I have been monitoring the temp and it's been nice and steady. At lock down I filled the reservoirs with water, laid down some paper for a cleaner hatch which I've never done before. I was worried that I shouldn't have put the paper down but I see a lot of other people do. I don't like how their poop and all falls in the reservoirs and gets all nasty while they're all hatching. I'm at the worried stage. This is my 3rd hatch with this incubator and the first two were puny. The second hatch was better than the first but all those chicks but two died within a week. This time I have 32 eggs and they've all looked good. I only had to throw out 3 eggs this time. it looks like it should be a good hatch, just nothing is happening. I hope there will be some come morning. That's how I woke up the last time because they're in my bed room :p
