Setting eggs, anyone want to join me? Hatch-Along

When I'm home alone tomorrow, I'm going to turn my hen alarm on for a while and see if it makes a difference. When I was over at the bator with my phone clucking my hubby was looking at me like I'd lost my mind. At least if I'm alone I wont have to deal with any weird stares :gig

Don't worry, I was ACTUALLY clucking like a mother hen to mine and THAT really got them going! I clucked at them after they hatched and they would look up at me and try to get to me. SO CUTE! Also it's the best way to get them to run over to you inside the brooder ;)

Going on day 24,23, and 22. Still no peepers, but strong rockers. Candled day 24 egg and there's still movement but rocking has slowed. Com'on babies I know you can do it!!

Wow DURR...that's pretty impressive. They must really be having a party in their shells! Is the day 24 one at least pipped internally?!

I'm thinking the more you candle the longer it takes to hatch. I candled a LOT and mine hatched on days 22 and 23.

Na he didn't pip. I'm thinking due to low temps do to no thermastat on my bator during the begining of incubation is causing me to have weak chicks. But when I was adding more water to the bator I detected a faint oder and picked each egg up, it seems day 24 egg had died some time before I candled and seen "movement" which I now think was fluid from the yolk sack. Chick was fully developed but the yolk sack was three times bigger than him and was a nasty brown/orange color and fowl smelling so I think he had some kind of yolk infection or something. Other babies are still rocking so hopefully I'll have at least one. If not no more hatching till I get my new bator after taxes come in.

Ewwww, but good to know. Yeah I figured if it hadn't at least pipped internally by today than it probably wasn't going to hatch. Fingers crossed for the others!

And yeah, knowing what your temp is really is vital to having a successful hatch :)

Yea, this is my first attempt at a homemade bator hubby is to affraid to help me install a thermastat on it to regulate the temp but so I have to baby sit it most of the time. :/ found out if I keep the house at 72 I can keep the bator at 99 easily. Haha. So complicated.

Go to Walmart and get a cheap digital one. I paid about 10 bucks for mine and it shows humidity and the temp. It just sits in there and is not attached to anything.

For anyone that has a homemade bator or is thinking about building one this is the way to go for a thermostat to control your heat.
