Thank you guys for all the help and support. I have a friend of mine going to start incubating about 2-3 dozen for me sometime this week.:) so I will hopefully have some babies she's a little more experiaced then me!! Haha.

Last night, I set 38 eggs from Delaware hens and Buff Orpington cocks. These are not eggs from my own flock ( I have only purbreds of several breeds ), but are eggs from my friend, Joe, and his birds.

Joe is experimenting with this cross to try getting hens that lay bigger eggs, and more of them.

We will see what happens in a few weeks....should hatch about Feb. 21st.

BTW, I have now learned how to feather sex chicks ! We will see how good I am at it, when these hatch and grow up !

Keep on cluckin' !

Thanks, Nikki !
Am looking forward to them, as they will be my first hatch this year.
I personally prefer purebred chickens, but it is always fun to see ANY new babies come out of the shells !)

All my chicks hatched out yesterday and today :D Several didn't hatch, one died trying to hatch. The humidity must have dropped because the membrane was drying up. So, when I saw it was happening to the last chick, I broke the cardinal rule and helped him/her out. I noticed just now taking pictures that it's foot was all folded up so I got out the bandaids. I hope I did it right. I'm sure someone will tell me if I did it wrong, right?

I have a variety of colors. Two with feathers on their legs from my only feather legged hen, a Brahma though I wouldn't have expected them to be black since she is white. I do have a black Silky but I don't think he can get to any of my girls. He tries though. None have 4 toes...

I like the stripes.

The black ones always have yellow bellies, yellow necks and yellow wing tips. Adorable :D

I also like the feet some have black legs and yellow toes. <3

The yellow chicks either come from a leghorn hen or one of the Tinted Tetras from TSC last year. I suspect this is one of the Tetra babies due to the black specks.

I'm going to call this one Tammy Faye. Have you ever seen anymore eye make up than that?

This one is super duper fluffy! My son said, "It's like my pillow!" :D

Two toned beaks are cute, too.

I've been trying to read up on sexing by the wings. Anyone know about this? The females are more developed than males at the time of hatch. In these next pictures I'm going to say....

Girl

Boy...

Girl...

Anyone know how to do that? I was going to mark which one was which with a band on the leg and keep my eyes open in a few more weeks and see if I'm right or wrong...I guess.

It's been really fun hatching along with everyone. I had so much fun hatching, that I went out and bought 4 Ameraucanas tonight :D Next time I'll hatch colored eggs :D This chicken business is really getting out of hand around here!

Feather sexing doesn't work with mixed breeds. You have to have birds with specific genes and traits for it to work. I tested it on my sex linked and there was no correlation to feather growth and gender.
