My mallard eggs are going into lockdown on day 22. Many are looking oh so cramped, and I think I saw a bill shadow on one so I stopped candling and started pouring water in and getting the temps down! My first babies (fingers crossed at least!)

Hmmm well it was super hot here, so my eggs hatched earlier than they should have. And weren't your eggs shipped? I've heard that can delay a hatch by a few days. Are any of them rocking?

Yes it was super hot here also and yes they were shipped and no rocking.

Well, they are all here. Of 12 eggs, 2 were infertile 1 quit at 1 week, 1 quit at 17 days, and 8 hatched. Look at these beautiful babies! I am still very curious about their breed though. They came out of large brown eggs from Rock Island Eggs (Petaluma Farms). I expected them to look more like production reds, but all of them are a nice yellow/cream color except one chick, which has a orange face and one dark spot on her back. Do any of you have any guesses what breed these little guys are? White rocks? Production red/Rock crosses? Thanks! Oh, and if anyone is in California I will be giving some of them away. My coop has reached capacity. Let me know if you are interested!

Very depressing hatch. Only 3 hatched. Started with 28 shipped. One was broken upon arrival. 14 developing at day 7. Double checked on day 10 - 10 for-sures, 4 iffy. Did not candle on day 18, just put in hatcher. Day 19 had couple pips. Day 21 two out and one needed a tad bit of help. Cracked the others. 4 iffys stopped around day 9. of the remaining non-hatchers, only one looked like it developed past day 16. And it stopped around 18 or so.

I have not had a hatch this bad in FOREVER!!!! I sure hope the three that lived are hens.

Gorgeous gorgeous chicks, sequoiacyclist!

Well, my seven of nine hatched on Tursday are flying it, very friendly, very healthy. Gave one known roo away already, a guy came to fit new carpets Friday and was telling me he has a brood at home with one hatched and more eggs, so I gave him a brahma roo to slip under her.

As for hatch #2 - we are not due until Tuesday but as of now have one pip and one hole. Early birds, for sure. Were less than 24 hours locked down, and I was SURE I heard tapping this morning passing the bator, but ignored it. Heard a thump this afternoon and saw pip 1 and when I came back later to check, pip 2. Only just cleared away my drying brooder and put Thursday's chicks into the big brooder outside when I had to clean all the gear, put up the heat lamp (again) and I've lost my dining table again. Argh!! Was hoping for just one day's grace and leaving it until tomorrow night/Tuesday morning to set up, but no, chicken god has other plans!

Hello everybody! After a sad Saturday (see my thread, page three - 'Does this hen sound broody to you?'), Sunday ended with a beautiful, sweet chick!!!

I'm hoping the others still hatch. Mrs. Parr (the broody) seems to be enjoying motherhood. I already saw her trying to call the baby for a tidbit found in the bedding.

Here they are:

Congrats everyone!

Now I need advice! My chicks are 3 days old today. I have them in an A frame coop that has a ramp down to a small run beneath it. The weather this week is supposed to be 100+ through Thursday. I know the chicks are ok with this for the most part, but Chole doesn't seem so happy about the heat. Do you think it would be alright to let the ramp down and hope Chole teaches them how to use it?
