Setting eggs Memorial Day Weekend! :) They're hatching!!!

I wouldn't be afraid to let it down. But I'd definitely keep a check on them. Learning to walk down may be easier than learning to walk back up.

Thanks Highline!

Well I have sad news

I got over to the farm to check on the chicks, and the littlest chick has passed away. She managed to get stuck in Chole's feathers, and I think Chole broke her neck somehow.

It never fails that it's my favorite chick that dies. I know it's not my fault, but of course I've spent all day wondering if I'd just shown up a little bit sooner if I could have saved her. But at least all the other chicks are doing great.

The moral of the story: for those of you with Silkie broodies, make sure their feathers don't get tangled.

So from 30 barnevelders that started hatching day 19, I'm now on day 21 and have five hybrids, four suspects, one definate double laced barnevelders (from 10), and 10 out of 20 blue laced barnevelders hatched. And still going...

Still hatching? Wow Sarah. How many did you set?

Airilith, I am so sorry to hear about your favorite little one passing away. Perhaps God wanted another silkie in his coop!

I set 30, due Tuesday (yesterday) first three were out Sunday night, day 19. But, out of 10 from one supplier 9 have hybrids and out of 20 from the other guy, 7 won't hatch. I candled them last night. All supposed to bebarnevelders. I got a barnevelder breeder to come over and feather sex them last night (dark bellies girls, white bellies boys) and e says they're all boys. Every last chick. How could that happen? I am going to give them a chance at feathering before calling my local falconry centre to take them away. Am really upset.

Ed - Snipes, WHAT is that on your hand?!?!

That's a great way to think of it. Thanks Sequoia!

Congrats Snipes.

Sarah, feather sexing only works on breeds that are speficially bred for fast/slow feathering differences. I didn't think that most (non commercial broiler) breeds were bred for feather sexing. I sure hope you're wrong about them all being boys! Eek, I just reread your post, to see that the breeder sexed them. I sure hope he made a mistake. That's a lot of roo's!!

This first hatch for us has been exciting, but sad also. A total of 7 chicks hatched, we lost a little chick last night and we aren't sure why it died. It was 3 days old and smaller than the rest, but so cute.

We do still have the other chicks that seem to be very healthy and the hen is taking such good care of them. We never knew how fun it was just to watch the mama teaching them!

Woke up to have 2 more pipping

. I am surprised as one of the rockers has not yet pipped. I am impressed how much you can hear by putting a stethescope on the bator. I can hear peeps better because they are barely audible, and I can hear them peck on the shells.

Sarah, the thing on my hand is called an amblypygid. I study them, and this one is from Panama. They are really awesome things, totally harmless but scary as **** looking!
