Setting eggs on FEB 10

I hope they will be okay. Didn't put all 16 in the new one at least. I only put 6 half of which, had air cell damage or oddly shaped. It took me 5 thermometers to figure it out! Plus my new incubator holds humidity way better so I have been having high humidity issues with it. At least I know now before my d'uccle duck eggs ship though I think I will put the d'uccles in old crappy but reliable.

haha old crappy but reliable! Too funny! I'm still not sure why I have more humidity w/o water than when I do. Can chicks still develop with oddly shaped air sacks? What causes them?

My frizzle Polish and mottled black/ blue d'uccle eggs arrived today. Most of the Polish are in decent shape and the d'uccle eggs have pretty messed up air cells. So I'm up to 70 eggs now... the duck eggs should be shipping today. I am insane.

HAHA no....addicted is the proper word I do believe! I'm going to do another candling this Sunday which I think is day 14 and see if the 2 I was certain was not developing are showing any signs and if not, out they come. I also had one I was unsure over which was the one I packed with wax, but I *think* it's going to be OK!

Have any of you heard of "egg sexing"? There was a lady on one of the fb groups for here in WV who said she was going to try her luck w/ egg sexing which apparently is an old farmers tale that if (If I'm remembering this right and if anyone's interested I'll find the post to verify) the ends are both flatter then it's a pullet egg, but if the little end is more pointy it's a cockerel egg. Sort of doubt it works that easily, but hey if you have the eggs yourself and want to have some fun, why not experiment?!

Also, once we reach lockdown since I'm having trouble keeping my humidity up, would it be in my best interest to mist the eggs quickly twice a day w/ luke warm water? It's not like much if any humidity is escaping for me to do this with the trouble I was having when regulating, but hey maybe that will change :)

I have a feeling egg sexing has about a 50% accuracy rate

Sunday is Day 14 and I'm really excited about this batch. I haven't been candling because my LED flashlight won't shine through the brown or blue shells. The cream bantam eggs are looking veiny, though

And they're old! My recordkeeping also failed after I got sick, so if I do have a success I'll have no idea why.

Didn't someone suggest boosting humidity with a damp sponge or damp cloth bunched in a corner? Did you try this and it didn't work? I can't remember. I'm a little concerned about humidity during lockdown but I'm going to try damp cloths bunches around the edges and all trays filled and see how it goes.

I can't wait until these eggs hatch! I really hope I get a few Olive Eggers...

Oh definitely! Getting to watch the babies develop in the eggs, hatch and grow! Its like being a new mom every time without the morning sickness and heartburn. When I was prego with Annie I got so sick I was hospitalized for 3 days! On that side note I may have to have knee surgery. I dunno yet. My dog wrecked my knee 2 months ago.

Haha! I'd say that's dead on!

Is there a Chickens Anonymous? I'm focusing all my energy on not turning into a chicken hoarder. I think as long as they have food, water, space, and clean bedding that I'm okay, though that last one is hard to keep up with. Serious addiction problem here. Hopefully this hatch will be the last batch of chicks for a while.

I've got 40 chicks (Ameraucanas, Cornish X, mutts from last hatch) in various brooders/boxes in the basement.

Plus 37 hens, cockerels, and pullets in the main part of my shed (sex links, EEs, various breeds), plus 38 teenagers in the other half (EEs, Ameraucanas, Silkies).

And 23 eggs in the incubator (Olive Eggers, EEs, bantam mutts).

So tell me your chicken troubles. At least we've admitted we have a problem.

I have a problem. LOL....and an enabler. My hubby is fine with my chicken antics. He even turns my hand turn eggs before work. :)

It doesn't help that I have room for just about as many chickens as I want. I have 2 full size coops and plans for another large coop and breeding pens. I only keep a few chicks from each kind I hatch. Selling the extras helps pay for my problem.
