Setting eggs this weekend! Aug 14th! any hatching buddies?

I just started hatching in cartons. I trim down the sides and cut holes in the bottoms. I was tired of seeing the eggs getting rolled around so much. The downside is I can only see one side of the eggs now. It also looks like a real pain for the chicks to get out, but they manage.

I just had 5 little sizzles hatch. 5 were early quitters. 2 of the hatched ones were pretty sticky, is that from high humidity? I keep it around 55% for 1-18, then it was around 65% for 19-21.

Yay, I love to see all the baby chicks hatching! Ours (the metric nonsense of eggs, including mutts, BOs, EEs, olive eggers and purdy bantam silkies/cochins) aren't due until Monday, but one surprised me by hatching today! I was so surprised to glance at the incubator and WHOA - there's a chick! He's cute. He's LOUD! There's another one pipping, so hopefully once he has a friend or two he will chill the heck out! Cute story ... He was down in the bottom of the incubator near the vents. I opened one of them, and he stuck his head out. Oh hello there! So I patted his beak and he cheeped at me. I was in chick-love. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to tell the difference once there are 100 or so chicks!

As to the chick blowing bubbles ... I don't know! I would be so torn. The practical poultry person in me says to leave it alone, it will either make it or it won't, and it's best to leave the incubator closed. But the mama in me says to get a medicine dropper and see if you can suck away some of the moisture from around its beak.

Good luck! Let us know how it turns out!

Well, I cheated and reached in, resetting the egg to keep it from drowning. The bubbles are gone and she's reving up for zipping! Fingers crossed!!! I have two that have pipped but not yet zipped. I removed the one hatchling so that I could clean its vent. It looks as though the little umbilical cord thing has a teeny tiny piece left and some poo collected. I'd rather it be alone in the brooder and comfy than in company and miserable from a sore tushie! I also removed that fully zipped overnight and somehow hit blood and passed. I gave it the day to be sure, but its gone. So sad!!! All that hard work and a freak accident!

yey chick one doing well, just starting to zip... chick 2 pipped yey I so cant wait, they are cheeping and rocking like mad... come on little chicks
