Setting eggs today...20th May...anyone else?

Am dying to catch up on the last 22 posts BUT first, I have news to spread!!! I got my first Maran's hatch!! Nothing this morning when I left for work, but just got home and found one little beauty had hatched and was lying gorgeously amongst the others.

Now though, I need some help... I have found that another has pipped... but at the wrong end. I'm so glad I marked those airsacs, or I would not have had a clue! I candled it, and found it is in the air sac and very active. Is it likely that it tried to pip the wrong end then corrected its position? Or is it struggling and am I looking at claws in the airsac??????? Help!

First, yay!

Second, I had two pip the wrong end with this hatch (It seems to be an incubator issue, as they shouldn't be so common.) One got out no problem, the other sat for about 24 hours at the pip stage before I helped it zipper. I'd say let it be if it's active and has access to air; if it isn't out after a day you might consider assisting.

Alaskan - goodluck!

everythings crossed for your remaining 8.
Loopy12 - got any more, 7 was my last count that you had? Congratulations! Such cute little balls of fluff indeed!
Gofygure - 100% hatch rate? Amazing! They do look very cute lined up in your bator.

I'm not sure. When I've had them pip at the wrong end they've stayed there. They take longer to hatch when they do that because its really the equivalent of being in the aircell, so I would leave it 24 hours before interfering, but keep an eye on it if you think it might have turned and pipped again.
I can't see why it would - as far as its concerned it needed to hit air and it did...

Congrats on the Maran who is out btw...meant to write that and forgot.
Congrats to all with new fluffy kids yesterday and today!

I am done...9 is my final count...4 Buff orps, 4 barred rocks and a brahma.
The Mille didn't make it. Pipped internally then died.

The other eggs were no movement when candled, and dead on eggtopsy.

So overall a very poor hatch rate for 30 eggs, but if you disregard the infertile ones its more like 60% not 30% so that's better, though no not great for local, non-shipped eggs.

I will try and get a photo. They aren't eating or drinking yet. I've dipped all their beaks twice and tapped with my finger - several are curious, but haven't yet tried opening their beaks.

Here they are...kind of dark in the corner of the room so they're not the best pictures. They have a heat lamp obviously, but its a brinsea so I have to take it out so you can see them...

This is why we go through it all isn't it!? What do you line the bottom of your brooder box with? It looks like one of those grippy-mat-thingys OT's love! How do you clean that?

Yes its that cheap rubbery drawer liner (on top of a layer of wood chips/sawdust/straw) - just for the first week to prevent spraddle leg. I use it in the incubator too - makes for an easy clean up after hatching. I don't clean it - I buy it in bulk then its so cheap its disposable...
