Setting eggs today...20th May...anyone else?

The hen is a Golden-Laced Cochin, bought for the specific purpose of brooding. Turns out I love these girls, which is why we there are a bunch of fluffy-footed chicks climbing around in the brooder.

Awwww...I can't see their feet in the picture.


The cochins and brahmas seem similar to me. Wonder what my brahma baby will look like when he grows up. He's a brahma perniciato maglie nere which translates as a black jersey partridge! I think that might be similar to your cochin but with partridge double lace, if you see what I mean. He has the adorable fluffy feet. Time will tell...
How big are your cochin eggs? The three cochin eggs the breeder gave me (that were infertile) were tiny. Is that normal for the breed?

I ended up assisting the one that had pipped. Very strange, I did it from the airsac and I was greeted with a bottom! This chickie was actually cheeping and trying to move but I don't know if it would have gotten out. It's inner sac was white, not transparent and was clinging around the chick very tightly - is that what they call 'shrink-wrapt'? It's still alive this morning, but is unable to stand... I suspect leg problems but because it's so chirpy and active I'll give it more time.


Culling a chick is a whole different thing to culling an egg!

That would be just awful.

What's wrong with the legs? Can you take a photo? Can it walk? Are the spraddled? Are the feet curled? Is it walking on hocks?

Yes, that sounds like classic shrink wrapping. :/ Thank goodness you got to it in time! Can you be more specific on the leg issues? Is he still keeping his legs underneath him or are they jutting out to the sides and all over the place?

The legs are fully formed. She is trying to position them under her to stand but they just seem rubbery and uncoordinated and yes Loopy12 she ends up moving briefly on her hocks. She ends up flopping around. But they're not splaying. I'm wondering if she is still just weak?

It happens when the humidity too low. She's been through a VERY rough hatch, she probably just needs to rest a bit. If she was shrink wrapped, it's likely the others are, too. Mist the eggs and keep the lid closed. Are they peeping? How long has it been since there was any activity in the eggs? You may have to intervene again.

Oh heck! I pipped one of the other 2, it was the same, stiff white membrane but still alive thank goodness. But it's not ready, still lots of veins. I've moistened the membrane and put it back in the bator. I'm afraid the membrane is stuck to the shell now as well. Oh heck!
