Setting eggs today 4/1/12 Anyone else?

i'm a little late getting in on this thread. i set 40 barnyard mix eggs on 4/1/12 candled on 4/11/12 and had 4 not developing.

now here is my question. my grandpa always told me that thunder would kill chicks in eggs if they were not on the ground. this was for under hens that if they set in a box and not on the floor or ground that the chicks would die in the eggs. has any one ever heard this or know if they may just be a wives tell? hope it isn't since we are having so real storms out here today.

I'm going to candle again tonight. Hoping to get help filming so I can actually video it and put it online! This will probably be my last candling session! Lockdown begins this Friday! Anyone else getting excited about the upcoming hatch date?

I had 3 eggs that seemed to be showing no development. After searching through dozens of pictures, I decided they were in fact not fertile. I had candled a few days ago, marked them as bad and put them to the side and waited until the kids were gone so I could check them out. So I cracked them open finally a few minutes ago,

Egg number 1 - very porous, completely clear egg york still solid, no smell - completely unfertile
Egg number 2 - yolk broken apart and chunky, no sign of any develpment, no smell -- I believe unfertile.
Egg number 3 - Had dark blood ring when candling a few days ago. No movement - cracked open to find a beautifully developed 14 day of incubation chick that was still breathing- sadly it died within a few moments.

Lesson learned - unless an egg is weeping or completely clear, I will never crack open another egg until after hatch day :(

I also will be candling again tonight for the last time. I want my son to be able to see the development, I have a several wigglers. I am sure he will love it. I can not wait for Friday!!! Well actually Sunday:)

Ok have a question....I set my eggs at 8pm on April 2....I have read that you don't start counting days until they have been in the bator for 24 hours....any thoughts??? My plan is to lockdown on the 21st... I have a Little Giant still air.....During lockdown I plan to put a container of water and a sponge in the bator....Do I pull a plug out to add water if needed or I had seen that someone else used a smaller indention/hole to add water....what is the thought with this...

I set some random eggs tonight, 4-2-12 under a broody hen. I'm not sure what will come out of them, or if any of them are fertile. We'll see what happens.

My 2nd Broody Hen started her sit-in on the 2nd, she got off her nest this afternoon and I counted 14 eggs, 5 blue & green eggs, 2 pale beige, 2 dark beige & 5 beige. I find it interesting that she has so many under her. Last week my hubby saw 6 under her when she got off the nest to eat. She lets NO ONE NEAR HER NEST, so is she stealing eggs from the other hens?

She is a Buff Orph, and so is my Broody Hen #1, her eggs are due to hatch on Wed or Thurs. She only has 4 eggs.
My roo is a GLW, and I have BR, BO, EE & Light Brahmas (I don't think any belong to them)

If half of Buffy Mamma #2 hatch, I will be happy.

I put some in the incubator on the 1st as well. For candeling I bought a lamp that is short at the home depot and bought a terra cotta pot with a drain hole that would fit over it.....works great with a 100watt cfl bulb in it so it is bright and doesn't get hot.
