Setting eggs today 5-3-12...anyone with me?

I set mine on the 1st of May....I kinda messed up yest as my temp was at 103sh the whole night and so I am not sure what kind of hatch i will get....if i get any that is:(....Anyways I candled one and i could not see veins but a detached baby chick like thing rolling around? I am kinda thinkn tht it might be dead:(:(

Disaster!

Power went out because of a storm. I was afraid this would happen. I had thought of getting my portable generator ready just in case, but I just never got around to it. I also thought about getting a battery computer backup, but I never got around to that either.

What I finally ended up doing was getting our car's inverter that plugs into the cigarette lighter. We use it on trips to use the laptop in the car. I opened the garage door, (you must open the garage door if you ever attempt this) started the car and took the incubator out to the backseat and plugged it in.
The temp dropped to 95 before I thought of this solution. The temp came back up after a while, then after about an hour and a half the power came back on.

Dunno if I saved the eggs or not.
I hope you all are having better luck.

Sawinga,

I think your eggs will be jut fine. My incubator has a "cooling" off feature that actually mimics the momma hen getting off the eggs each day to go eat and get a drink, take a dust bath and catch up on the latest hen yard gossip. It shuts the heat and humidity off for a bit and then comes back on, for poultry it actually shuts down for 2 hours. The temp drops down to about 88. Then it comes back on and it gets right back up to normal. I am on day 13, candled last night and all of my eggs that started show nice embryos and movement. This cooling off feature is started on day 7 and you stop it for lockdown because the humidity drops too. It is the first time incubating for me, so we will see what I get, but after seeing the eggs last night I am pleased. I have read that when people have temp drops it just delays the hatching by however long the temp drops.

Let us know how it turns out. :)

I really hope it works....I know this sounds bad but even if one hatches it will be a successful first attempt because i made this incubator with stuff lying around in the house so been not so hopeful about it....Lets just hope there are chicks to come:):).....p.s Having this hobby in practice actually has made my mind at peace.....rooraaa

Well today is day 14 for my eggs. I will candle them all again tonight, probably late around 9 or 10pm. I did take the questionable one out the other day...I think on day 12. I candled it and still could only see a red ring. I cracked it open and there was a small amount of blood and yolk. I randomly pulled about 6 others and they all had movement. I hoping to not find any quitters tonight.

Hope everyone has a great day!

If you are incubating expensive or mission critical eggs you are wise to invest in a good sized computer UPS power protector for several reasons.. Power outages and varying voltage can happen at any time so the purchase is wise.. When the hatch is done hook it to your brooder or just use it for your computer.. Our system is huge and protects half the house because of our crummy power so it was a no brainer to plug into it.. Just a few more days till we check for embryos and we have our fingers crossed in hopes of a good percentage.. My wife is wishing for more willow legged Buff Orphington/Silver Laced Wyandottes crosses as she has fallen in love with our 1 little peeper..

WyoChicken Momma, I think this is day 14 for me as well. I set mine May 3rd at 3pm. Thank you so much for starting this thread. It has been fun and really interesting. I will be candling tonight as well. I started with 40 eggs from my 3 Dominiques, 3 BOs and 1 Amer. They were between 10days and 2 days old, just stored in the coolest place I could find in this insanely hot spring we are having in Alabama. This is my first hatch, so I waited until day 9 to candle. At that time I removed 7 eggs that looked pretty clear with no movement. That leaves me with 33 hopefuls. I have one really weird extra jumbo green egg that I am so anxious to candle. Please post a couple pictures of your good ones so I will know better what to look for at day 14. btw, what kind of chick is that with blue wings?

I will try to take pictures of the candling. I have tried in the past and they never come out right. I will use my Nikon tonight if I can get my husband to hold the flashlight and the egg.

Are you referring to the chick in my avatar? That is a Naked Neck. It is hard to tell in the picture, but she is super cute. She is mostly red now with some darker splashes of color, her name is Nakita and I love her. Well, I love all my chickens, but the NN hold a very special place in my heart. I have six of them. :)

I will be candling tonight. My first 9 eggs will be 7 days old. Tomorrow and Friday will be candling days for the other 14. (11 eggs and then 3 eggs)
