Setting eggs today 5-3-12...anyone with me?

Okay I gave my 15 month old, first time, broody Maran hen 8 eggs on Friday morning 5/4! I am really excited because I hatched her and now she will hopefully hatch some eggs for me and some of those eggs are hers! This will be my first time hatching eggs from my own flock, so we will see what happens!

Good luck! I wish her well. :)

Hi, Glad I found this post. I also set eggs on the third. I set a mixed lot of eggs I had shipped to me. They had a lot of different roosters over mostly ee hens. Should be interesting. I hope I can get them to hatch out. I put them in my home made incubator because I have another bunch coming in a week and they are all Americana ee mix. I want to keep them separated. I also have three different batched of chicks growing right now from past hatches. 4 are my barn yard mix chicks and got 2 roos and 2 hens. I got 4 Turkens to go with them. Go one roo out of them. they are 7and a half weeks old. I did another hatch with my sister in law and got 4 more of mine to hatch. ( roo has too many hens and favorites) This batch I got 2 roos and two hens. Some of them are mixed with my sex link hens. They are 4 weeks old and getting too big for their box. They will go out today with the others in the house. Third batch is mostly my shipped Americana and ee mixed with a couple of surprise eggs mixed in. I got 11 in that hatch out of 14 shipped. One of my eggs hatched. They are 2 weeks old. I can already tell one roo. and possibly two showing signs of being a roo. still a little early for them.

I have a love hate relationship with incubating.

I love seeing the hatch and hate when they don't! But I keep doing it. I am now having the problem of culling out the old chickens. I hate that part too but it is something I have to do to keep my eggs production up and feed costs down.

I am doing this hatching to add new blood and more roos to my chickens. I have about 30 chickens with one roo. Even when I put him in with fewer if they aren't his favorites (which I don't always want ) he still is selective with the ones I put with him. It takes too long to get enough eggs if I have to put him with just two or three hens. I need outside stock now anyway. I am trying to explain away my addiction to hatching...

Not always easy to explain to non chicken people.

The just look at me with a strange look and say.........ok??
All right here is a picture of my eggs. I am not turning yet but think I will start today. I let them set for a day then put them in my made up turner thingy and propped it so it was upright. So this is day 5 of not turning so will start to turn. I couldn't see the air sacs on any of them when they came. I just took one of the light ones out and can see a air sack at the top where it should be now so will turn them.

I'm a little late in posting. I was hoping I could still join in. I set my eggs on the 4 th they are bantam WC Polish. Just finished hatching little Silkies for my sister and now I will be hatching her these too. I'm really having fun doing this. This will be my third hatch. I also have one broody Silkie hen who will be helping.
