Ahh, so I went out to check on Red this morning. Two of the other hens had her kicked off her nest. They'd managed to break one of their own eggs in the nest and crack one of Red's eggs!

I took Red's egg inside and candled it. The chick was still moving in there and it doesn't look like the membrane was broken. So I sealed up the crack and gave it back to her. Her eggs have some egg-y coating now.

I don't really have a good place to move Red and hate to move her at this late date anyway. It's my evil Barred Rock who kicks Red out. I feel like I should move that witch to a dog crate until the eggs hatch. She acts like the big boss and lays eggs the size of a banty's. I should have cooked her.

After reading more about cracked eggs at this stage, I don't feel quite so worried about the egg. It's not leaking and today is like day 18-19.

I have a little bitty coop that's not as secure as my main coop. If I can catch Chipley (the evil BR) I think she's going to spend the next 3 days in there!

I candled day 14 last night, still 25 duckies wiggling around. I go into lockdown on the 22nd. Does anyone know if it will hurt to lockdown a day earlier? I put 7 chocolate calls in day after the mixed calls so lockdown for them would be 23rd. I was going to just do lockdown on all at the same time 22nd, will it hurt them?

I honestly don't know anything about incubators, but I don't see why starting lockdown a day early would hurt anything (or anyone).

I am doing a staggered hatch and have one batch on day 15 and one on day 14 in the same incubator. They will go into lock down on the same day so one will go in a day early. I don't think it will hurt them to go an extra day in lock down as long as you give them extra time at the end so they can get out of their eggs. We'll see I'll keep you posted.

I went to check on Red this morning and lifted her up a bit to take out any eggs that were laid under her today and imagine my surprise when I saw a fuzzy butt (maybe 2) and an egg with a pip!!!

I didn't want to disturb anything so I let her back down quickly. She won't let me see a thing now of course. I just came back in for more coffee

and my camera, then I'm back out there to see if I can get a glimpse!

Definitely 2 chicks. They look so floppy and still a little damp. I was about to have a heart attack when she was pecking at them some. Not hard, but I think she was trying to get them to stand up and move under her more.
