Have a great day to all the moms! And my DH is taking me shed (coop) shopping today!!

Hope to get a pip tomorrow. Two of my eggs were wet on the bottom yesterday, but nowhere else. I didn't know what to do. I think they may be bad, but I'm not sure. Could it just because I overfilled something trying to get humidity up, or if I maybe had it laying against the microfiber pad? The two didn't show movement, but that would be difficult to see anyhow in a brown egg. (I only saw movement in one egg). The wet didn't stink at all so I left them in. Hopefully they don't explode and ruin my wee little hatch. Advice? I only have a couple of days left.

Oh, and I just bought dark and light brahma, french copper maran, and guinea eggs! My Brinsea should be in Tuesday if I'm here to receive it. It's a good thing! I should be setting Wednesday I guess? I hope I can give away a majority of the chickies. I don't want to keep more than 5 or 6 (or 7).

Hello Everyone,
Happy Mother's Day to all you mommies. Sorry I have been absent for a couple of days, but I had a bake sale to cook for and run. It was at a big poultry swap so we sold all our new silkie chicks. I found out the eggs from my neighbor are not cochins, but regular Mille Fleurs. We came home with Blue silkies for my oldest daughter, and a new buff roo, very pretty, for my youngest daughter.

How's it going Momsflock, I read you had 4 eggs hatched!

Good for you! How are the other eggs, did you candle them?

I love the pics of Cinderella and her little brood! I just love broodies!!

Cute baby pics Erica, I hope the wobbly one continues to improve.

Well I should be going into lockdown again soon, for the second wave of this hatch. I hope everyone else who is still hatching along is doing well.

Ohhh~ so jealous of shed shopping!!!

I have 4 in the broader box. and they are so cute!!!
I candled the other 4 and cannot see movement. They are brown eggs and it is really dark inside. So I did something stupid and awful! I had one that I could not see movement in early on, and it looked like there was a possible bloodline, so I cracked it open to investigate...... There was a developed baby chick!!!! It still had some yolk and blood, like it needed more time to develope. It did not chirp, move, or anything. Did I kill it or was it already dead? I do not know, I am very new at this. This egg looks like the others, so I am NOT touching them and seeing if they will hatch by day 25...am I doing the right thing? Anyone know? I feel terrible about cracking open the egg~ ugh!

You didn't kill it.

It was already dead. If it had been alive when you opened the egg it would have been moving. When I open them to investigate I always do so from the fat end of the egg and ope the air cell first, that way should the chick still be alive, I would run less risk of breaking a blood vessel. I did manage to save chick number eleven this hatch like that. I was sure it was dead, I saw no movement, so I carefully opened the shell from the air sack end. I was about to toss it, because the chick wasn't moving, but touched its little beak with my finger nail. It opened and closed it beak a few times without making a peep. So I treated it like a shrunk wrapped chick until it finally finished hatching. I am sure it would have died if I hadn't stepped in, but I don't know why...I had pipped internally, then stalled out. I swear some times when candling dark eggs I feel like i am imagining movement. Like it is a trick of my eyes or something.

I think you had a good hatch, Momsflock, especially for shipped eggs. Good night all!

No, don't feel bad. It was already dead. Did you notice anything particular that may offer a clue of what happened? It could have been deformed in some way. I agree that it was a great hatch! I have only 4 possibilities out of 12 original eggs - and only one had definite movement Saturday. Day 25 sounds pretty late. Are you supposed to candle at that point to check viability (or help)?

I have over 40 eggs being shipped in the next day or two! Holy cow! I just want to see if I can do better next time.

Craigslist hasn't worked out for me too well yet on the chicks that I want to move on, though I have a couple of pullets going to a new home on Tuesday. These cockerels are going to be tough to move - and I'm listing them for free!

Hi Lutz, what kind of eggs are you expecting? All from one source or from a couple? Shouldn't you be hatching now too?

I am back in lockdown as of yesterday. I just checked on the eggs under the broody and you can hear them chipping away inside the eggs, but I didn't hear any peeping yet. I am waiting to see how my 3 ameraucana eggs do, and since I don't care about them watch all the barnyard mix hatch!

I candled the 22 new ameraucana eggs yesterday and it looks like 19 out of 22 are probably developing. Its really early, and several are really porous, so I won't cull until after these other eggs hatch. If they do well, they will be my last hatch this spring I think. I will wait until I select breeding sets and cull the undesirables before I hatch any more. (probably, maybe, i think).

How about you Daria? What's the latest?

Ugh. I don't know. I just checked and the dang temp was up at 104 degrees! What the heck? So I lifted the lid, added some water to compensate for the humidity loss, and am trying to stabilize. I checked the eggs and didn't see any movement at all. Today is day 27 - guineas take 28 days but can vary from 26 to 28. I don't have any hope really. My two thermometers are about 2 or 3 degrees different so I have no clue what it really is. Also, candling showed some transparency at the bottom of a couple of eggs. Does that indicate that it stopped developing? Or could it just be lagging? Why can't I just have a perfect first hatch??

On a better note - I got my Brinsea Eco 20 with a turner today and am so excited! If I screw up with a Brinsea than I really am a dope.

I got 10+ Brahma's (light and dark), 10+ French Black Copper Marans, and 20+ Guinea eggs - all shipped priority yesterday from 3 different sources, and I requested that they all be held at the post office. Who knows if that will really happen. Unfortunately they've partially closed our post office and do sorting at the neighboring one. Maybe I should call and see how that works.

Out of what's in the brooder now, I'm going to keep one of the Buff Orpingtons, one Barred Rock, and one feed store Americauna (Easter Egger). I'll also keep the 7 guinea keets. I got lots of cockerels, and I don't care for one of the BO pullets. I really don't like these two RIR pullets. Challenge me? They just earned a ticket on the trip to the poultry auction in a couple of weeks. I will hopefully get a Maran pullet and a Brahma pullet to keep.

Thanks for asking...I really needed to get that out!
