I am going to candle on day 7 or 8 and then right before they go into lockdown. I just take them out really quick (but careful not to drop them) and check them out and put them right back in. maybe a min each..... not too long and the more you open the bator the more the humitity gos away that youve been building so i have a sponge in a dixie cup in the bator to keep up the humitity....

I can see the children into the flashlights. My Son has a son that takes everything apart to see how it works. Flashlights are a major problem. My Son has hidden them , punished, nothing works. I even gave each child one, hopeing my Sons would last a while. They admit they did it but alas ,there is always a piece missing!
How long can you hold an egg out for candleing? I am afraid of the temp in the incubator dropping and the egg being ruined.

Ive wondered about this model, so you say you like it i would assume it works well then!? Does it ever kill ya that you can only cook 6 eggs at a time? that would be the only kicker for me, but i was thinking about buying one of these....
Just found this thread, can I join? I set 7 eggs on the 21st. I have call duck eggs, my first time with them. They are assorted colors, so it will be a surprise when they hatch. I'm using my Brinsea Mini Advance, love that little machine.

I love this little incubator, I can set it and almost forget it. Just check the water level every three days for humidity. But it keeps the temp perfect, and rotates the eggs perfectly. My DH didn't want me to get an incubator unless it was small, and me new to hatching didn't want something to complicated. This was the perfect one. My last hatch was shipped eggs 4 made it to lockdown and I had 3 hatch (the one that didn't piped at the wrong end didn't realize it till it was to late).
I think next year I will be looking at a bigger one, possibly the Brinsea Octagon 20. Hatching is just too addictive!

Welcome, Yoie! I also am using a Brinsea Mini Advance. I love it, but I am starting to eye the octo.

We did buy a wine fridge that I am going to convert to a incubator, but we haven't had time. It'll be huuuuuuge and nice when it's done.

What do you all do when your eggs aren't a perfect fit in the incubator and you have a little space between them? What do you use to keep the eggs from knocking against each other while turning? I don't have that problem but I was just wondering for future references.

Okay now I have a question. Day 1 I "candled" and marked a dark area at the large end of the egg. Day 5 the "shadow" had increased considerably. This is by shining the light up from the small/pointed end. But when I shine the light down the dark/shadowed area was in the bottom part. What does this mean and are they duds? And I also do not see an air cell. The first 3 days the humidity was around 56% most of the time until I read up on it and took the water tray out of our home made styrofoam incubator. It went down to about 38% or lower now. Please give me your opinions...I am afraid that I have cooked them to a soft boil....ugh. Especially since we had to get rid of our rooster and now won't have fertilized eggs to try.

I candled my 15 brahma eggs tonight and 4 weren't fertile..so now I will hopefully get 11 to hatch on easter Sun.

This is my first time ever trying to hatch eggs so I have my fingers crossed

Can someone tell me what the humidity is supposed to be at? Right now its around 35 but it fluctuates between 35 & 55.

I don't know for sure but it sounds as though this "dark" area might be the air cell. The air cell is in the fat end of the egg. You are supposed to shine your light through that fat end when candling; through the air cell.

well guys im on day 7 today, candled some of my eggs last night 2 where good, saw a babie moving and one was very bad! i tossed it, well i cracked it open and it was just runny moosh... so.

candling all the rest this afternoon wish me luck!
