Hi there,
Well , The most wonderful thing happened here. I have a hen thats gone broody. I slipped 8 of my bator eggs under her and she is happy. If she hatches them at the same time as my bator then I will try to slip my other chicks under her, assumming we have any that hatch. Then i won't have any chicks in the house to clean after. Although I do enjoy their little antics. Momma hens do such a wonderful job of teaching them to eat, drink, and roost when they are ready. Also they teach temp control and I can allow them to be out in the sand area next to the coop quicker. I have 4, 6 week olds in it now that will be ready for the next area by then. A momma raised them too. They have been roosting since they were 5 weeks old. I love when they start to roost. Less floor clean up for sure.
Hope all are doing well with their eggs. I have had drops in humidity twice during the night but the temps have held steady. I had forgotten to add more water.

I am so uptight that I ck on the eggs umpteen times a day but the nights I do have to sleep, then I forget to add water if the humidity is ok in the late pm.
Ten lashes for me. LOL. So far I am pleased with the new form of hovabator. The proof however will be in the "pudding" as they say when they are to hatch. Have a wonderful day everyone. Gloria Jean

Hi all, late to the party but so happy to have found this thread so I can have some hatching buddies for my first ever hatch. I set 32 backyard mix eggs on 3/20. Candled at day 4 and 11 were clear, so that brought us down to 21 with 7 that I wasn't sure about. Candled the 7 "questionable" eggs on day 7 and 2 more were clearly infertile but the remaining 5 were good (although 2 were really really hard to see through, most of my eggs are green EE eggs). So now we're down to 19 eggs developing. Many of them had lots of movement in them last time we candled. Since it is our first hatch and many of the eggs were "older" when we set them, we decided to aim low. A 20% hatch rate would be ok by us, which means only 6 eggs need to make it through lockdown to meet that goal. Obviously I'm hoping for more than that, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I finally candled on Sunday night (day 11). Everything was pretty good for the most part. I had 5 that looked to be infertile. Went back yesterday and recandled the five, and saw development in one of them.

Don't know how I missed that the first time through, but I now have 32 in the bator @ day 14 - 2/3rds of the way there!!

YEA! i candled mine on day 7-8 (cant remember) and we go rid of 3 i think, then i added 16 more to the bator for my staggered hatch... i will re-candle all of them (batch B for the first time, batch A for the 14 day candling) on the 5th or 6th of april.

Im thinking of building a hatch out or "lock down" bator DIY style in the mean time, just cant quite figure out what to make it out of yet.... cooler, wine fridge, cabinet....
