Setting eggs tomorrow, anyone want to join?

I just candled again and saw the start of blood vessels in one of my D'Uccles!!!! And I added some hot water this time, about a 1/4 cup...humidity was down to 10% and I wasn't seeing any air cells yet...

I think I might try candling tomorrow...I know it's early with brown eggs, I shouldn't really see anything until day 5/6, but I don't know if I can wait much longer...

Your going to to go blind if you keep doing that...get a hobby already...hehehehe...I often don't candle just for the fun of not knowing.

For getting humidity up, it's not about volume of water, it's about surface area. Try putting a couple jar lids (salsa jar, pickle jar, etc.) with water in them in addition to the water you have in there already. That should raise it.

I worried that the eggs were losing too much weight too fast so I added some water, but then I got home with my hygrometer and with water it was like 47 percent...and I knew that was too much, so I dumped it out. Now the humidity is at 24 percent and that's what I want. So I'll keep an eye on the humidity, but I'm not going to add water again unless I absolutely have to until lockdown

The brown eggs are hard to see, the easiest for me are my 5 D'Uccles, and one Leghorn. I do see a great yolk shadow in all but 2 of my 16 eggs so I take that as a good sign.

I keep candling for 2 reasons: I am trying to keep very close track of air cells for humidity levels. Since I haven't seen air cells yet, I am assuming I need to up my humidity a bit. The other reason is I am highly interested in the development of the chicks and keeping records. I know some people don't candle often because not knowing is half the fun, but I'm kind of a science geek about this kind of stuff...

As of 6am this morning I am at 22%...if I can keep it anywhere between 20-30 percent I think I am happy. I'm going to turn in a bit and I will candle half of them tonight.

As I mentioned, we heat with wood. Well I got up this morning and fire had gotten pretty low, temp in my incubator was 95 at bottom of eggs and 99 at top!!!!! I stoked up the fire and turned on the blower. As soon as the room heats up I know the bator will also. Dang dang dang!!!!!! Humidity is staying at 32-36%. Thanks for the info on area of water and not amount! Going to Walmart this weekend I will pick up some sponges! I sure hope this temp drop didnt hurt my chickies! This is day 3 for me so I will candle today. Kinda hard to find a dark place to do it, maybe wait till this evening.
