setting eggs tonight!! anyone else?

How is everyone doing? I've been Missing In Action, but trust me I've been busy :D.
My Buffy didn't stay broody (maybe I mentioned that) so I had to put the EE eggs in the bator. As of today -my first time to candle this batch- all 5 are developing nicely. Here is one picture of one of the Day 4 embryos. The others were just as visible and obviously growing too, but this photo was the least fuzzy. Notice the greenish-blue tint to the eggshell. (Just a hint-You have to turn off the flash)

LaynaDon, I hope you get yourself an incubator. I finally made the decision to have my husband return the Cricut Machine I wanted for Christmas. Although I love doing crafts, they tend to take me away from my family. I haven't used the Cricut in 3 months and I felt an incubator would be a better investment. Plus, everyone in my family can get involved with my chickens. I ordered a new Circulating Air Hova Bator with turners on Sunday.

It should get here next week. Until then, I'll have to do a staggered hatch with the 5 Easter Egger eggs and the silkie eggs I'm going to set for the Easter Hatch-along! I'm a happy camper in my little chicken world.

See ya'll, Cali

I'm glad to hear your eggs are doing nicely!!

Yay for a good incubator!!! :D I'm so happy for you!

I've made a few flyers for my new hatching "business" and I'm gonna try to post them around town tomorrow.
We have to go to TSC tomorrow to get some grower. I'm almost completely out of starter! The big babies are eating me out of house and home! The little babies have to have starter for awhile longer. Maybe I should just get some more starter...? I'm not gonna have enough starter to finish the little babies off anyways. The big babies aren't quite old enough for grower according to the package. Maybe I should get more starter and then grower... I don't know. @.@

Anyways, we have to go to TSC tomorrow anyway, so maybe we can stop by a few places and post some flyers. Also, they are getting a shipment of chicks in tomorrow morning! I'm gonna call before we go to see what breeds they get... I really don't need any more chicks... The ones in the brooder would love some more company, though... Those 17 might get lonely... =P

Wow! I wish an incubator would fall into my lap like that!! I think I'll just start out with a little giant still air. That's what I've been using. I don't have money for anything else at this point. If this takes off, (incubating for other people) then I'll save my earnings for a better one. (After my trip to Australia...)

I hope the eggs the breeder is sending are still good eggs, with them being some of the last... Does that effect (affect?) them?

ohh! so it's your orps that are setting??? I have two and I've been wondering if they go broody well. I reeeaally want some good broody hens. My bantam hen will probably go broody at some point, but she just started laying so I'm not gonna be too pushy on her just yet. :p Now I just have to pray that both orps are girls and that they both have good broody genes.

I'm sorry, what I meant to say was "Come on girls! Couldn't you have chosen a better time?? Don't you know that you're about to go to a competition??"

Yay for internet!! And brave brothers! And send the snow to me! It was in the 80's today!!

That is very funny, the bator that "fell into my lap" is a LG still air.

Of course then I had to run right out and buy a turner! People say they have a lot of trouble with them but so far so good! The breeder that lives close to me finally called today, she had storm issues as well. She said she came home from being gone a day and the nests were full of eggs again!!!
yesss.gif
She offered me 8 for the price of 6, so I said SOLD!!! They should be fine even if they are the end of the laying session, size should be good and they should be fertile as well.
I DO appreciate that my girls are broody but I would like to get some eggs out of the best two before they went broody!!! Silly girls!

We also have, from my signature line, a broody feedstore Speckled Sussex and two buff orpingtons.
You can come and get all of the snow you want. I bet my neighbors would give you theirs too!

Don't you love people like that?

Also, do you enjoy chicken showing?

I think I'm gonna look into it. First I have to figure out what all is required. :hmm Youtube, here I come.

My chickies. :)

My 2 BO's :D

My RIRs :D (I had 4, but I gave one to the lady I was splitting the chicks with)

I think most of these guys are part Barred Rock, but I'm not positive.

My yellows. :) The one is front is part EE

The black ones with a yellow spot on top of their head should be barred plymouth rocks.

Very cute, some are hatched and some purchased, right?

I do like showing. I showed in 4-H and FFA for over 10 years with bantam white plymouth rocks, commercial layers, and the fryer project. Then I sold my FFA sheep, gave my show birds to my neighbor kids that were in my 4-H club, focused on cows and went away to college.

Now with a little push from work (poultry focus right now) I am getting back in to my birds. So, I have my show quality, SQ, large foul, LF, Black Orpingtons. My mom kept all of the commercial layers. We have always had layers and started raising our own meat birds when I was about 6 or so. We still raise a few 15-25 of those for home use each year, not like the 60-100 we used to raise for competition and selling to relatives). The best part about showing as an adult is NO Fitting and Showing! Just select and prep. (bathe, dust, clip nails, or otherwise clean the plumage) before you go to the show. Of course there are entry deadlines and learning about the different entry types like county fairs (they are the best place to start), state clubs or associations, district meets and such. I am slowing meeting new and old people and finding even more that I either forgot or maybe never knew.

I am rusty as I've been out for over 15 years but some of the lingo is coming back.

I GOT MY LOCAL AND MAILED EGGS TODAY!!!

The post office called at 7AM (at least it was not 5 AM) to tell me my eggs were in. I was a little worried after several horror stories about the post office. But the ladies down there were so interested that they called twice just to make sure that they had them were they needed to be. One call was from my carrier and she just wanted to make sure that I was o.k. to NOT have her deliver them, she was afraid of handling them more.

They were pretty cute when I went to pick them up too! I got the call about the local eggs last night and drove down to make an egg collecting loop this morning. All 20 eggs are now, labeled and resting to be put in Sat. when I get home from the WA Feather Fanciers Spring Show.
celebrate.gif
I will probably put in 4-6 of the mixed layer flock from Sat. at my tester eggs then I can also enter another of Monhonri (spelling, yah, yah) contests. Or, who knows maybe I'll pick up a few more at the show Friday night and Sat. I have room for about 14 more eggs, don't tell my family

Thank you. :)

I meant to post this one, but we were running out the door and I had to go.

If some of you will remember I posted a while ago about my baby cousin that liked to chase the "chichins" around. This is her.

She's actually surprisingly gentle with the chicks.
