2 chicks so far! :D Welcome to the world, Babies!

Now, I'm going to make myself an ice cream sandwich. Giving birth is hard...

LaynaDon, I'm sure you burned a lot of calories giving birth so it is o.k. to have ice-cream!!!

I am a country girl too, but with bad spelling. I just try to make up for it with spell check. YOU are very funny!

So, I won an auction for LF Lav. orp. project eggs of 8+ to be shipped early next week and I will also be getting some BBS LF orp eggs from someone within 45 min. of me later in the week. I get to join the Easter hatch!!!!!!!!
yippiechickie.gif
I signed up on that thread too but will post on here as well! However, they will be going in between 6 PM and midnight on the 17th because I will be away at a poultry show the 16th and 17th. They all get to go in as soon as I get home. Bator will be warming up before I leave on Friday.

Also, could not remember if anyone on here is from WA or OR but I have started a new thread at

for upcoming poultry events in WA on March 23 & 24.

I'll spare you the trouble of having to count those and tell you, we have 12 chicks so far!! :D Lots more pips and attempting zips. They are hatching like crazy right now. As far as I know we have to Red Barnes (A name my brother came up with for RIR/Barnevelder cross.) A couple EE, and the rest I'm not sure about. We have moved 7 to the brooder. They are so cute! :D

None of my Leghorn eggs have even pipped yet. She was sick when we collected her eggs, and we didn't know it. I don't know if they are still alive or even healthy. We'll see. It might be better if they don't hatch. I don't know if I want those genes in my flock.

+1

We have 13 now. :)

I'm trying not to give up hope on the others. I know it's early in the day for that, but they seem to have just quit. :\ Thankfully all that have hatched are seemingly healthy. I don't think if I got a deformed one I would have the mental capacity to invest in him. (of course depending on how deformed he was.) I'm glad I don't seem to have one at this point. They are fluffing up nicely and have adorable little peeps. :) We have to go to the feed store soon. I didn't realize until this morning that our chick waterer is being used... We have to get a new one. ={P (

HAHAHA I totally added the moustache by accident!! But I'm keeping it, because moustaches a awesome.)

Does anyone know if they have chicks at Lone Star Feed? I have no idea if Lone Star is outside of Texas, but I though I'd ask. I think someone at TSC recommended I look there for other breeds of chicks, but I can't remember. We'll be there today, so I can look. :)

3 are trying to zip now! I think 2 are RIR and 1 is a Red Barne. I'm not positive because the chicks are sitting on them so I can't see the markings on the eggs. I know one is an RIR! Woohoo! I knew it was too soon to give up on them! Why would you guys suggest something like that?? =P I'm so happy. :D

Yeah, Congratulations, LaynaDon! You've had some awesome hatch rates, girl.

I think you've found your calling in life....at least something with animals.

I love the picture of the 7 babies resting, so cute. Are those all RIRs? Do you name all of your chickens? Here are some names for RIRs: Cinnamon, Ginger, Spice, Chili Pepper, Rosie, Rusty, Rhodie, Nutmeg, Clove, Red!....

I've never been to a TSC. I really like our local Rio Linda Feed Store, though. It has a small town feel and the workers are so helpful. They get baby chicks in every Thursday and always have a different variety. So, it's good to go once a week to see the new babies. The prices range around $2 or $3 per chick -not bad! My silkies were $3.29 each.

23 and counting!! We actually have 25, but 2 I bought at Lone Star. They are BO's!!!!!

:D There are still 4 or 5 pipped that are still working at it but I'm not sure how any of them will hatch.

It's funny that you say that, Cali. About me working with animals. I'm actually going to be doing a vet science course through 4-h in a few months. It's a 3 year course and I will come out of it ready to take a test to become a certified Vet Assistant. :D I'm ecstatic! In the meantime I'm seriously considering hatching eggs and selling chicks for money. This is so much fun!

We have 3 RIR's, 3 or 4 Red Barnes, 2 BO's(!!!!) and some mutts. I gave in and helped out one RIR it zipped the long way around the egg somehow and had one leg out. I could see most of it's body so I knew he couldn't be majorly deformed. (right??) My mom and I agreed that it would be okay to help this one. I had to completely zip for him and break some of the membrane because of the position he was in. He just couldn't push hard enough to come out with only one leg in the shell. He's a nice looking, seemingly healthy baby. :) I thought one of his feet was a little curled, but I'm not so sure anymore. Now that he has gotten his balance he looks normal.
hu.gif
Even if it is curled, he can get around fine so I guess I'm not gonna worry about it. I have believe we already have more chicks than we got from the last hatch! (Well, not counting the BO's. We still have two more to go in order to have more hatches than last time...)

They were already out of the Wyandottes they got yesterday at TSC!! They got them around 9 yesterday morning, I went in at 12 today and they, and all the bantams were gone! They only had three ducks left.
ep.gif
I didn't really need Wyandottes anyway. But I was hoping for some silkies. :\ I'll call next week. :) I told my mom if they got in a breed I wanted next week, we were going that day! They sell so fast!

Cali, we don't name most of our chickens because we are going to eat them at some point. But those were some "original" names! Did you come up with them yourself?? ;)
