Got three more eggs today to pop in for the last 24 hour set up. One more green and two from the Orpingtons for 22 total. MUST STOP ADDING EGGS NOW!!!
I set my first goal and now I have to stick with it!!! Yes, you bad influences I will have to wait until day 6-7 because I will be away at work, probably a good thing.
Do you all post pics of the eggs in the bator? Other than the turner they just are kind of there.
Unathorized chick story: July and August are super busy with the garden, canning, haying, fairs/shows for cows and chickens oh yeah and work!
At the end of July I thought we had 3 Speckled Sussex hens in with the feed store egg flock. Then in August I only saw two but thought nothing of it. I came home from my two weeks of work and fair and my brother is outside BBQing. He was visiting because he can't BBQ at his apartment.
He says, I've been hearing this strange noise the whole time I've been here. It sounds like something needs oiled or like a piece of metal that is about to break off. I looked at the barn, all over, checked the TV antenna, the tractor, and the chicken coop. I even checked to make sure the dog didn't have extra tags. I said, lets check the gates to make sure the cows haven't itched another one off its hinges! We are out by the corral and we start hearing "the noise". Out from under our coop come the missing Speckled Sussex with 14 chicks!
We have a real mix in there between roosters and hens so what they all are is anyone's guess. We only found one unhatched egg under there so she really did do a good job, that's 93%! And the 14 ended up being 7 pullets and 7 roos. We are waiting for the little pullets to lay to see what color eggs they lay as the dominate rooster is Ameracuana.
So, now the hole is plugged and that Speckled Sussex hen is banded for possible future use as a broody! The End
