setting eggs tonight!! anyone else?

Started my very first hatch on monday night, two days ago. It was going to be a dozen, then turned into 41, incubator to max capacity. Can't seem to do anything small! :) I have sizzles, ameracaunas, hamburgs, blue laced red wyandottes, and polish. Both people I got eggs from kept giving me more and more and suddenly by one dozen turned to two turned to 41. Ha. I also have cream legbars and swedish flower hens in a friends incubator because I was too scared to put them in mine for my first hatch. They were set today. Very excited! Very nervous! Keep wanting to candle them and then thinking... has it only been two days?!?
Good luck with your 41 eggs!

I'm on Day 19, and getting more excited every day!
BTW-Be careful when you candle. The embryos are so amazingly beautiful from little spider veins up to fluffy chicks!

Papa Brooder, I understand your excitment! I've been reading all the previous comments and it makes me wish mine were ready to hatch!. Coming up on day 4 for my eggs. Think I'll candle a few. Question? What is "Zip" I know what the pip hole is. Just learned about the internal pip. Didn't know you could help chicks out and have them survive? I tried helping two that were piped for 2 days last summer and they did hatch, but the feet were deformed.

First the chick pips...then, it zips! A zip is when the chick starts pecking around the egg before popping the top off and hatches

I'm back, told you I would post photos. Have to check my last two eggs still. Will candle before bed and eggtopsy on Friday whatever has not hatched. I WILL do this to further my own education!

Thinking about trying that float test too just for the experience.

My temporary mini house brooder AKA recycled cattle protein lick tub!

First two chicks partying in the food!

All four that I have at this point L to R in the back coming forward as my brother named them: Squint, Monkey, Chip and Dale. We always say that the Ameracunas look like chipmunks, at least the light ones do!

Sounds to me like you got a bum batch from the farm that sent you those eggs, ON TOP of a bumpy, uncaring ride from the post person. I'm sorry, that is so disapointing! Did they write "hatching eggs" on the box & all that?
I used a lot of differnet shipped eggs last spring and they just seem to have a not so high hatch rate. This spring I ordered twenty but she sent 37, great, I thought, a million chicks! Not so much.....I ended up with 17 healthy chicks (& one not so healthy chick). And I lost three chicks to water accidents while I was at work. The eggs I opened were mostly showing no signs of growth, I had 5 that pipped internally then stopped & 4 quitters along the way. I havn't incubated egg from a local farm but from what I've read, they just seem to have better rates.
Ok everyone, I need all of your expert hatching help... Please read thru my experience and let me know your thoughts.

I have just completed my second hatch in an incubator and my very first with shipped eggs. So I am really new to this. I put in two eggs of my own and 8 FBC Maran eggs. Because all of the eggs were so dark, candeling was near impossible. I had perfect temps, no power outages, I didn't take them out except for twice to candle. So here I am on day 24 and I do an eggtopsy. My two eggs had development my cuckoo maran was the furthest developed probably quit around lockdown time. The other one was an early quitter, probably before day 10. Now here is my thoughts on the shipped eggs and I know that there is risk with shipped eggs. 1) I ordered 10 eggs, but two were broken they were wrapped in bubble wrap that did not have inflated bubbles (was this a shipper issue or could they have been flown and maybe an air pressure thing?) 2) Of the 8 eggs only 1 showed any sign of development 3) two of the shipped eggs I was able to open without busting the sac and found the yolk still intact like a regular egg but there was no sign of fertility, no white spot, no veins nothing. 4) One of the shipped eggs had a green ring which points towards bacteria. There was a very faint stale smell to the incubation.

So my questions are... Do you think that I got unfertilized eggs and 2 what went wrong with the hatch? Could it have been the bacteria in the one egg? If so why the two different stages of development?

I will chalk this one up to an educational experience as disappointed as I am.

Cowchick, your babies are adorable.

Sorry to hear about your chicks LaGenia. Are you the one that hit over 110? I'm trying to decide if I will eggtopsie tomorrow (Thurs.)

or wait one more day. Friday will be day 25 for the last egg I put in. I'm kinda feeling a little chicken about eggtopsying, no pun intended.
tongue2.gif

mine hit 115 for a few mins. had 4 internal pips at one point then 2 of those pipped, 1 zipped but the other died without zipping, 1 died in shell, and the last one i pipped myself and helped it out and it is now even more up and atem than the one that zipped. so total i got 2 babies out of a possable 6 (2 were fullly developed and died without pipping did eggtopsie and their intestines were outside their body and thats probaly due to the temp problems i had, all of those temp problems could have been prevented).

i'm about to upload some pics but wont get them up till tomorrow

No, they didn't write down Hatching eggs on the box or even fragile, but the box looked fine on the outside. joined the march swap, so we will see how those eggs come out.

most wont put hatching eggs on the package as people at the post office will steal those. i have heard it happen way to many times. now my packages had on them 1) fragile and the 2nd) fragile and live embryos on it
