setting eggs tonight!! anyone else?

Welcome back, Layna! It's good to hear that you have pips - how exciting! I'll be watching throughout the day. Hope everything went good while you were away.

By the way, did you see my two new babies from the feed store? I bought 2 little black silkies to go with my 4 blue silkies. The older chicks (only 2 weeks older) are so nurturing and protective of the babies. It is precious to watch them together. I'm just loving all my babies. We take them out about 2X a day, one at a time to just cuddle and play with them. They are becoming total lap chickens and I'm really considering buying chicken diapers! We also give them playtime in a laundry basket together in front of a sunny window (while I clean the brooder). They are so happy that they jump a few inches in the air and then sprawl out to sunbathe and then peck around in the chick scratch and then fall asleep in the warm sunshine and do it all over again. (These chicks are like puppies that peep!)

Oh-I'll have to tell you about my "chick sexing method" sometime. My son calls it "witchcraft" (it is not), but he cannot deny the results that I get on all of the people and animals in our family. If the "results" are correct, I have 4 hens and 2 roosters! (And their behavior even backs up the results.)
Here is a little eye candy of my 6 silkies enjoying a little Cali-Sun!

I'm jealous, LaynaDon; this is my first attempt and we're failing miserably. After 20 hours of chirping, piping, and teasing me with her cute little beak, she turned around in her shell and died. Now I've got another one chirping her heart out and I want to just open that shell for her and say hello. The shells on my RIR/Americauna mixes are so thick and hard that I think it's an issue. Not sure. Anyway, I'm VERY happy for you. Can't wait to see the pics!

Oh no. :( I had 2 do that to me during my first hatch. One had a hole made that it could have crawled right out of if it had wanted to. It died overnight though. I opened the egg and the chick was perfectly formed. I don't know why it didn't make it. My advice would be, don't help them. I don't know if that's something you have seriously considered or not. I helped one out of the shell. It was deformed and had to be culled it was devastating. A friend of mine had a friend hatch eggs for her and she gave me some of the chicks. A large percentage had to be helped out of the shell. A large percentage, were also deformed. I have had very bad experiences with helping. Unless you don't mind culling them, I wouldn't help. In my humble opinion, in most cases, if they were strong enough to survive, they would be strong enough to hatch.

On a lighter, happier note, I'm glad to hear you've got another seemingly on her way. :) I hope she decides to come on out soon! This is such an exciting/annoying wait process isn't it!!?

We still only have one pip that I can see, but one of them is rocking like crazy and a lot of them are peeping. I love their itty bitty peeps. :) I can't wait to see how many we have after this hatch!

Hi Cali!

Everything went great while I was gone. The leghorn is perking up nicely so far. The chicks, as it turns out, did not have cocci. What we found in their poo was in fact "shed intestinal lining". (Who knew??) They were only on meds for a day and a half. They are doing great now. They have been moved outside into a tractor inside the coop. (Which is just about finished!! Pics to follow)

I did see your new babies! They are so small! It's amazing when you add new babies to your older ones, to see just how big your older ones have gotten isn't it? I love silkies.

I wish I had some.

I tried to post last night and I had a whole long comment all put together. I posted it, got up this morning and it was gone. -_- That's 15 minutes of my life I will never get back.

I'm thinking about getting some chicks from TSC. They have gold laced wyandottes this week. Do any of you guys know about them? They are so pretty. Since my chicks aren't sick I can get some!! :D How much do the chicks at TSC cost on average?

Quote: I can't post a picture because I'm still a newbie, but she's a little RIR/Americauna mix and sort of stripey. Sure make a bunch of noise, too! Thanks for talking with me; I feel like a new mom! I can't wait to hear about your new ones - keep us posted, please :)

Your first little hatchling is always the most precious. (Until they get all big and feathery and you can't tell them apart anymore...

I'm glad she made it into the world all safe and sound. :) I know you are just itching to put your hands in there and hold her. I had to wait a full day before enough of mine had hatched to make it worth taking them out. (they never really fluffed up in the incubator, I had to move them to the brooder.) I was so impatient!!! I just wanting to hold the cute fluffy (well, not at first) things! They are so light and little! I can't wait for my first hatching from this batch!

I have I think 5 pips so far. A few of them are working hard to get out. I think I'll have a few fuzz butts by tonight.

Here is a series of pictures I took today of my various chickens/chicks/coop/etc.

The chicks enjoying their first time in the coop. (

I just noticed the Redhorn scratching his head!!)

The redhorn is definitely a roo. :\ At least he's pretty... pretty tasty! bwahahaha!

Our RIR. Isn't she getting pretty. :) (Yes, that is as tan as I get, Don't laugh at me.)

Our beautiful coop. And my little sister playing with the chickies. :)

Complete with doors and everything! :D

All I had to do was put the nesting boxes somewhere high and put a few eggs in them and they got the idea. On the first day! w00t!! :D I put 3 of those in there.

And lastly, a pwetty fwower. :) It just bloomed in front of the chicken coop and I felt like sharing it. Your welcome. =P

Nice pictures.

Wow - Your "chicks" are getting so big and are almost feathered out. Didn't yours hatch less than a week before mine? Silkies are slower in feathering probably.

The "coop" looks great! You did a good job supervising your Dad on his work! And, the daffodil picture is lovely enough to put in a calendar.

Any more pips (last I read you had 5)?
