setting eggs tonight!! anyone else?

I have some sad news and some super happy news. Which do you want first?

Oh, darn. None of you are online. =P

Okay so, bad news.
The chick that was sick, died. He was so weak last night. My friend walked in to him laying on his back. When I went to move him, he didn't move at all. He didn't even act like anyone was touching him. He flopped onto his face and stayed exactly where I put him. He never even opened his eyes. I had my dad take care of him. :(

Good news.
None of the other chicks are sick so far. :)

Really good news?!
Jack had her kittens! Last night, 3 babies were born just before midnight and 3 were born on St. Patrick's Day! 6 in all.
She had 1 calico, 1 ginger, and 4 black kittens.

She had the first 2 in the litter box.

Hi Layna :) I'm sorry about the baby chick not making it.

Jack's kittens are really cute! Really-they were born into the litter box? Oh, no. Did you help deliver the kittens or does the momma cat do that on their own?

The first 2 were born into the litter box, before we new she was giving birth. She came out of the litter box when my mom came into the room and delivered the rest on the rug. We didn't really have to help her. We had to clean litter off of one of them, but other than that, she just wanted us to pet her. We were scared that #5 was stuck at first, because she had some trouble delivering him. (her?) It was just fatter than the others. =P She did really well.

Well I could not set my eggs for the Easter hatch at the appointed time as I was at the WA Feather Fancier's Cascade Spring Show. However as soon as everyone that is already breathing was back in their correct pen, fed, and watered I PUT THE EGGS IN THE BATOR.

I had everything set up yesterday morning before I left for the show and I just had to add water and put the eggs in. I think it was about 9-9:30 PM Sat. At least the drive home was not too bad, I just don't like driving that long in big city traffic (for about 2 hours in heavy and one hour in light). Do we have to post a photo of our eggs in the bator? Maybe I missed that, will have to read back a few pages. I have put in 12 Lavendar project LF orp eggs, 8 BBS LF orp eggs, and my brother helped me select 6 eggs from our mixed layer flock for a total of 26 eggs. Thought I might pick up 4-6 at the show today but not a lot of LF eggs for sale or auction. That is o.k. I will us my home eggs as baselines for the others as purchased and shipped eggs.

Let the Easter hatch begin, day 1!

Anyone else on here doing the Easter hatch? That is what I'm talking about above.

I had a good day with my birds at the WA Feather Fanciers show. My LF black Orp, cock took best variety, and best of breed, then went on to take best English,

Grrr!
I went up to the coop to feed and check on everyone and one of my older chicks was dead! On further inspection they all have coccidia! I immediately put them on meds, but I'm going to lose a few more. I'm debating putting my little guys on medicated feed. I'm tired of Cocci. My dog has had it, my chickens have gotten it! This stuff sucks! Their are some really dumb parts of chicken husbandry. Now I now why everyone puts their chicks on medicated feed. -_- Oh, the joys (not!) of being new at this!

DE is short for diatomaceous earth. It's something like crushed fossilized diatoms... That's all I really know. It really fine to humans and bigger creatures, but it's sharp to bugs. Some people put it on and around their gardens and plants to kill pests. It's a wormer. You can feed it to cows, goats, horses, dogs, rabbits, chickens, etc. as long as it's food grade. Even you can eat it.

And thank you for your congrats. :) I'm enjoying watching them. They are so cute.

No more deaths so far.

Still lots of bloody poo, though. The meds seem to be keeping it at bay for now. I hope.
I cleaned the coop from top the bottom yesterday. Hopefully that will help. I do not want to lose anymore. :\

That's good that you have the cocci under control, Layna. Do you have to throw out the eggs until the medicine gets out of their system?
