setting eggs tonight!! anyone else?

LaynaDon - how do you make chick splints? One or two of my good SQ/BQ chicks that came in the mail look like they need some help. Is there a good thread on here? Thanks!
Went into lockdown for the Easter hatch last night and my chicks came into the postoffice this morning at 5:30.

Went into lockdown for the Easter hatch last night and my chicks came into the postoffice this morning at 5:30.

For curled feet I just use medical tape. I cut of a piece long enough to wrap around their foot, lay their toes out how they are supposed to look, (on the tape) then lay the other side of the tape over their toes, connecting the tape to itself in between the toes.

If his legs are messed up... That's a whole different story. I never found one that I really liked. The thing is it needs to be something that will hold their legs in the natural bend, and still allow movement, while still being supportive. I tried bent cotton swabs (cut to size) popsicle sticks... I can't remember what else.

What's wrong with him? Is it just curled feet or is it his legs? If he has slipped tendons my advice would just be to cull. (And call the hatchery to see if you can get a credit or something.) Slipped tendons are almost never able to be cured.

Oh, and yay for chickies! I miss the little fuzz butts. The youngest I have are 3 or 4 weeks old. (I should probably calculate that, shouldn't I?)

I'll be hatching some Sliver Wyandottes soon! My grandmother had a Wyandotte hen she wanted to breed, so she got a rooster. He turned out to M-E-A-N. He is the worst I've ever seen. You can't look at him without him trying to attack you. She didn't want to kill him until she got some babies, but she doesn't have an incubator. When I got an incubator (Did I mention I got my very own incubator?!

) I offered to hatch for her in exchange for some of the chicks. She'll be getting me the eggs in the next couple weeks!

I was wondering if you got your bator! I was looking at my mom's one remaining feedstore Wyandotte and thought I should maybe pick some up when I was at the Farm Store yesterday (they had a bunch).
So, when they arrived it looked like I had two chicks with the splits, I can't remember if that is the correct term or not, I'll look it up again tonight when I get back from work. I have been going like crazy this week and my allergies and going back to the Chiropracter after 10 + years is killing me. I get home from work and have passed out dead alseep twice this week before dinner was even done! Luckily I was not cooking. Anyway both chicks are looking better now. One still looks a little off so I may try the bandaid method I read up on the other day, when I get home, we'll see how he looks.
I have two pips right now for my Easter hatch and I'm trying to get my humidity up, it keeps fluxuating. O.k. have to change into work clothes and get on the road.

I haven't posted on here in awhile. How ya been? Congratulations on your incubator! I know you'll continue to enjoy using it.

Just wanted to report on my Easter Hatch Silkies. All 13 went into lockdown on Tuesday. Yesterday 6 hatched on their own, I assisted 3 in the wee hours of the morning (and they are doing good). And, 1 hatched 15 minutes ago. So far 10 chicks have hatched!

The other 3 eggs are just sitting there without even a pip.

I might move the earlier hatches to a brooder in a few hours if I don't see any more pips in the other 3. For now, they are doing fine in the warm, cozy bator. First, I'll have to move the Easter Egger chicks out to the coop (in their brooder, of course) to make room for the silkie brooder.
I'll post some pictures later. They are SO cute....I think I've got 3 or 4 splash andthe rest are light or dark blues and possibly silver or blue partridge

My Speckled Sussex that arrived Thurs. by mail are doing well. I can't even tell what chicks had the splay legged thing when they arrived! There are two that don't seem to be doing as well, one more so and neither one had splay legs when they arrived. Will separate them tomorrow and leave the two smaller ones in the house in the small brooder.
Of course they may be overrun anyway as I will move the three or four older chicks out of the bator tomorrow into the small brooder. Had three Easter hatch chicks waiting for me when I got home tonight after 9. One looks like it is zipping and 8 more are pipped out of 23 that went into lockdown on Wed.!!!

Wow! You must have a ton of chickens! XD Congrats on all your new babies. I hope your sickies are doing well.

I'm really sad because one of the partridge chicks is really sick. It's brain is swollen and I think it has wry neck. It hasn't eaten anything and doesn't even like when I try to give it Sav-A-Chick or vitamins. I think it wants to die, but neither my husband nor I can kill it. I have access to Prednisone so I might try that treatment. I just wish it would die on it's own. This is so hard to have a sick baby.

I almost can't enjoy the other chicks because I'm so worried about the sick baby. Sorry about sounding like such a sap, my energy is just drained.

I'm sorry about your sickie. How is he doing? Have you heard about the vinegar/baking soda method? Do you know anyone that could do it for you? It sounds to me like he's suffering. I know I can't see him like you can, and that's your call. Just try to make the best decision for him that you can. If my brain were swollen and I couldn't eat, I would want someone to end my misery. I hope everything is going better over in Cali today. *hugs*


Your babies are so cute! I miss little ones so bad.
We had a kinda tragic accident over here yesterday. My little sister was moving our youngest chicks to their outside tractor and left them in the transport bucket for too long. Three suffocated and died. I felt bad, because I forgot to warn her that they were outgrowing it, and she felt bad 'cause she had killed "my" chickens by accident. They were all roosters that were going to be eaten anyway, so it wasn't a huge deal, but it was sad. We used them to practice butchering, and went ahead and culled our chick with cross beak. It was so sad. He was about 9 weeks old and was the same size as the 5 week olds. He was so skinny! His ribs and breastbone were sicking out. I felt bad we hadn't culled him earlier. I didn't worry about it because he was keeping up the others at first. At some point he just stopped growing and was always eating. The others started bullying him and he would come hide behind us to get them to stop. He eventually learned that the 5 week olds wouldn't bully him and stayed by them a lot. Well, we are 4 chickens shorter now, so there's that.
