Ooh ooh, I just found this thread! I set 14 Silkie eggs on the 13th :D When I candled on day 10 I had to pitch 7 eggs (porous :( ). So obviously I have 7 left, they seem to be doing great, and tomorrow is lockdown so I'm hoping for the best! Good luck with your hatching everyone! Now I'm off to read the rest of this thread to see what everyones got going on

I am on day 18, and will go into lockdown tonight. I set mine at midnight on 11th/12th July, so probably should have locked down last night, but I did read that some people only lockdown once they hear chirping/see pips (internal or external, not sure). I cannot hear or see any movement in my eggs, but I can see that some have chicks inside them - my torch is rubbish. I am going to remove the clear ones tonight and get the humidity up on the rest for lockdown then.

I wanted to ask before I candle again - do white chicks look very pale through the shell, or dark like any other chick? Just don't want to chuck any viable eggs when I can only see a light coloured shadow. It is most probably the yolk in an undeveloped egg rather than a white chick, right?

I also have one egg which looks dark inside, but the air sac is mobile like it is still floating in liquid. I suspect that the dark shadow is bacteria and not chick - has anyone had this before? The air bubble moves to the top of the egg when I rotate it in my hand. It doesn't smell bad.

Just hoping I get some babies from this lot! I have another batch in a home-made incubator that I will put into the Brinsea to hatch. This lot is I think 5 days behind the first lot.

Good luck to everyone, and I hope we all have success!!
You should probably place the egg that is dark with loose air cell into a egg carton with the fat end up for lockdown. If the chick has developed it should hatch like this.
I have pips this morning! 3 of my 5 are pipping! I'm so excited! :D
SO happy for you.
Quote: LoriChristi is the ladies user name on homesteading today that I got the strawberries from. I also got 20 random everbearing type from her also. She has a bunch of diffrent varieties. I got them in May and have all ready eaten enough strawberries to feed an army. I love everbearing strawberries!

WELOCOME to the best hatching thread on the interwebs!!! Great group of people. Good luck with lockdown!

I just found this thread :) I wish I found it sooner!!! I am in lockdown as of an hour ago. I started them at 11pm on the 12th. Am I locking down too early? I started with 45 eggs from 3 different owners, about 15 different mommas including Ameraucanas, EEs, Cochins, barnyard bantams, and a bunch I have no idea about. I got rid of 11 on day 12 (not fertile or stopped developing before day 5) and another 6 yesterday which has stopped. I have 25 that are moving around and 2 which look good, but I see no obvious movement.

I AM SO FLIPPING EGGCITED! It's my fist batch. We have 4 teenage chickens in our backyard, but 2 are roos and because we can't have roos where we live, we're trying to make 2 more brothers or sisters for them. My friend said I could have the pick of the litter if I hatched some for her and her friends and hand tamed them, as she loves how friendly my guys are. (They jump on my lap for cuddles and petting)

Anyone have any advice they wish they were given?

Mind if I join in? I just set 15 red/tuxedo coturnix eggs from Stellar and 1 that I watched my golden female lay this morning. My last batch made it to the day before lockdown, but then my 4 year old turned up the temp in my homemade bator to 120. They didn't make it. So this batch is in my bator 2.0, which is (hopefully) out of reach. I hope they do well, they're gorgeous birds.
By your profile pic, it looks like we have the same coop? How do you like yours?
