How well does the brooder has to be insulated? (I am editing my post to fix this word... insulated, not isolated... sorry - in my language this is the same word)
Here is the "sketch" of the early brooder I plan to use. When they are bigger, I plan to build something larger out of large cardboard boxes. I plan to put paper grocery bags on the bottom (+ pine shavings and maybe paper towels on top of shavings). I do understand that I have to cover the sides with more cardboard so they don't pick their heads through. But do I have to cover the top where the heat lamp is and cover the upper parts of the sides, like where the blue ribbon is now?

And second question: how early can they receive some green grass? How do I know that they are ready? I plan to grow some wheatgrass and we also have some clover outside.

36 eggs in the incubator right now, put them in am of April 3rd.

Thanks for any advice!

Now for the guessing game ... how many will hatch? I say 60 !

Got the brooder ready? Fresh batteries for the camera and the flashlight? Motrin for bator backache?

I lockdown tomorrow, with Mary's Icelandic eggs!

I just candled again and removed two more eggs. Seven eggs will go into lockdown tomorrow. How high do I put my humidity? Should I open the vent or wait until Wednesday?

Lock down already? I candled last night. I removed one that I broke open today. It made it to the eye stage but not much farther. The rest were wiggling and trying to get away from my flashlight

Do we lock down early in case they hatch early? I planned on lock down Tuesday or is that waiting to long?

I set most of my eggs on Wednesday because that's when they arrived. I didn't think they would arrive until Good Friday.

I keep my humidity at 65% when I start lockdown. It fluctuates as the chicks start hatching.

When we candled, we had HUGE airspaces for the most part.

Should be interesting to see. I'm guessing 50 will make it, my son says 60 out of the 69.
