If you were a Mama hen, the chicks would be eating all kinds of stuff from a day or two old. But, chick starter has everything they need and should be the main food. You could feed them boiled or scrambled egg, also.

I plan to move them out of the rabbit cage into something bigger made of cardboard boxes later. At what age do they start to fly? I'll probably have them in a different brooder by that time. And thanks for reminding that I have to look for some netting to cover

I have tested the temp in the rabbit cage after turning the red heat lamp on... I have to admit the heat lamp will have to stay pretty low to keep it around 90F. The person I rented the incubator from said one heat lamp is enough (I have 36 eggs in the incubator, did not candle all of them, so did not remove any), what do you think? Will I know from their behavior if 1 heat lamp is not enough? Will there be enough time to run to the store and get more? My landlord should have another heat lamp, but he has not found it yet. I have read that the temp can be lower if there are a lot of chicks - they heat also by each others bodies.

We have lockdown! My last hatch is in the hatcher! All 6 Icelandics show development, and I am so hopeful they will all hatch! I also have 10 Barred Rocks, and 1 Jersey Giant egg in lockdown. I sure hope these ALL hatch. That would be fabulous!

I have had pips in the incubator (that I forgot to move into the hatcher until day 20), and they hatched most wonderfully. Nice and clean hatches, they were. I did this on two occassions. That is when I started not worrying about the lockdown humidity anymore.

That's good to hear/see/read Kathy. I haven't been able to keep my humidity up to even 35%.

I put my eggs in April 3rd at 11pm what day should I go on lock down and when should I start going watch crazy lol
