Setting on Good Friday

How cold is it where you're putting them? If cold 4 to 5 inches put the paper towels on the top shavings cushion them if you have one with leg issues the cushioning helps. I do paper towels for 2 days then just go to the shavings the chunky ones not fine. I tried the deep bedding and really like it lowers the cost for lights....whatever works for you is great

It is about 58F there, it is in the basement of the house. Probably too cold for the baby chicks. I have tested the heat lamp and had to lower it alot to get the thermometer show near 100F. Would adding more pine shavings (4 inches?) under the paper towels help to keep them warm?

we have 3 chicks in the incubator already. I am updating the album I linked above. they keep all the other eggs rolling

What is the minimum number of hours they have to spend in the incubator after hatching before they can be moved into the brooder?

Thanks to everyone for helping me!

The more shavings the more insulation it just takes time for the shavings to heat up that's why you're supposed to have it ready the day before but even I procrastinate and don't get it done 24 hrs before and the chicks are okay. Just go by how they act if they huddle up more heat (I use 2 lamps usually 100 watts) and raise the light if they are at the edges of it.

Here's a pic of what we just made as I have horse stalls to brood in

I cannot believe how much more my chicks run around even when it's been cold
