Setting some eggs 5-13-15. Looking for some folks to hatch a long with me.

Yesterday I did my first weigh-in on my 41 eggs. The goal is to use weight loss as a guide to humidity levels. Day 0 my humidity was 64%, day 1 and 2 it was 50%, and day 3 it was 42%. The ideal weight loss for day 3 is 1.9%, and I averaged 1.5% loss. Considering I only have a scale that gives me grams, I figure I am close enough. I'm sticking with the 42% for now to see if I get closer to the ideal loss of 3.1% tomorrow.

I got my Ova Scope High Intensity on Monday; I tell you, that thing is amazing. Nothing to look at right now, but it sure lights up the entire egg, even my darker brown ones. I'm so anxious to see what will be there on day 7.
So my eggs each lost about 2 grams each the first week. How is that? I'm sorry I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around the math.

A = current weight
B = Original weight

(A / B) - 1 = Weight Loss %

On day 7, the ideal weight loss should be ~4.3%

It is recommended that you look at this weight loss % using the average weights of all the eggs, so average original weight, and average current weight.

I attached my webcam to my Ova Scope Hi Res today. If you are wondering, as I was, how to do that you need an elastic band. The Ova Scope doesn't really give you a good way to attach, it gives two little nubs (that really should be hooks, and there should be 4, not 2), but the idea is you are centering your webcam over the scope hole, and getting the elastic band to saddle the scope and hang onto the nubs. A thinner elastic band works better. Anyway, after a bit of fiddling, I got it to work. If you set your webcam software to auto-focus, you should get a good picture every time. I'd post pics, but at 4 days old there's nothing to see other than a lit up egg...more on day 7.

My average current weight is 34.5=A
My average original weight was 36.5=B
I got 5.8%...is that correct??

You put the current in place of the original, that's why you got 5.8%, switch them around. But the point is, your bater is dryer than it should be, you want less weight loss. So, bring the humidity up a bit and recheck in 2 days.

Higher humidity, less weight loss, and vice versa.

Ideal weight loss is;

Day 3, 1.9%
Day 5, 3.1%
Day 7, 4.3%
Day 9, 5.6%
Day 11, 6.8%
Day 13, 8%
Day 15, 9.3%
Day 17, 10.5%
Day 18, 11.1%

which hopefully leads to hatch day at 13% weight loss, not that you can or should measure that...;-]

Will the eggs lose weight even if they aren't viable? When I did my week weigh in on the goose eggs they had lost the right amount of weight for their first week, just over actually. When I candle them, though, they don't look good to me. Will give them another few days to be sure though.

This is something I am watching for. I did my day 5 weigh-in just now, and the numbers are all over the place. I have one egg that has lost 9.1%, and others that haven't changed since they were set. Of course at this stage there's no way to tell which are viable, but I am hoping once I have determined viability that the data I am collecting will show some tendencies.

The humidity for the last two days has been 41% and 40%. Average weight loss today is 3.0%, and the ideal weight loss for day 5 is 3.1%, so its looking good.

Using your numbers I got 0.05479 or about 5.5%.

Thank you so much! I can get the numbers but I'm having trouble getting the actual %!

Ok, thank you!!! I'm going to up humidity a little bit! I appreciate your help! You seem to be right on target!!

Check out this day 7, candling pic! This egg is extremely transparent!
