All of the action has slowed here. I have 3 Mottled Houdans, 1 silkie that I don't think will make it and 8 very cute mutts. My 10 year old is bummed about the silkie and we are still holding out hope for the last few but no pips from them yet. For our first time, 12 hatches out of 22 is better than I thought. It was in a still air LG with turner but to better my chances next time I ordered a Hovabator Genesis yesterday.

Hooray ...Lots of new babies hatching for everyone!

Oh I am sooooooo excited...I have 3 hatched (brahmas) 1 zipping (Polish) 1 pip (Polish) 2 pips (brahmas)...This is my third hatch and second hatch using my King Suro...So far this is the best hatch I have had...Come on babies!

Guess you know where I will be glued today!

Well mine weren't supposed to hatch until tomorrow evening but they started this morning about 9:00. So far we got seven out. For those that are worrying about temp and humidity and what not here is how its went for me.

I don't have no fan in the bator. The temp has held at about 100-103 throughout the last three weeks with an average at about 101.5-102. The humidity has held itself at 29-31 percent with no water in the bator. I did try adding water when I took the turner out on Wednesday. The humidity got up to 50% for about an hour then declined. I kept adding water but it wanted to stay at about 33%. I added some sponges to add surface area to increase humidity. No luck. So I just quit bothering with it and left the humidity to it's own devices and it has stayed at 30-33%. The biddies seem to be doing just fine. No interventions and they are all jumping around. The humidity has increased to about 75-80% all of a sudden since the hatch has begun, but I'm just gonna leave it be. Hen's have been doing this for hunerts of years without all the fancy gizmos, and thermomters and whatnot and chickens are still around, so I reackon the eggs aren't as sensitive as we may think. So those of you that have been, or are currently worrying, about the little changes here and there (like I did to begin with).....
TAKE A DEEP BREATH, IT'll WORK ITSELF OUT!!

I do have a question about sexing the little fellas though, if someone could answer it for me. Both my roosters are Barred Rock. I have two New Hampshire Red hens, one Barred two barred rock hens, and one black something or other hen. So far all seven that are out of the shell are all black. Three have a white spot on their head. I have read somewhere that the white dot means its a male if they are sex link chicks, but I have not read anything specific to my Rooster/Hen combinations to see if this applies in my situation.

Any help here would be appreciated as well as any references that may be provided. Thank you in advance.

Okay These eggs are going to put me in the nut house!!!!

I opened the bator and misted the inside really quick with very hot water!!, I know not supposed to open it during lockdown, well evidently not having a typical hatch here! Okay I candled every dadgum egg!! out of 32 that were put in lockdown, 10 are the only ones with a ray of hope

... I am so upset!!! and here it is day 22 and nothing but bad news, I am only giving them till sunday. so I hope I get something!!!
I dunno what to do! This is so upsetting!

Wow! So much is going on here... I'm sorry I disappeared for a a day or so but I've been busy.. Here is my final count! 6 eggs that never made it to hatch but were fully developed, 7 production red/speckled sussex x barred rock, 4 Ameraucana, 5 delawares and 1 dark brahma x silver ameraucana that I am absolutely head over heels in love with! There is good news and then there is bad news.. Ok.. The bad news first..

I had to help 6 chicks hatch due to humidity issues at the very end.. A few of them were very badly shrink wrapped and three chicks had to be held in "chick ICU"... All three had not absorbed the yolk completely and I lost one of them today..

Now, the good news!!!

The two other chicks that were in "chick ICU" made a full recovery.. The first one got out yesterday and joined his/her hatch mates.. The last one was very bad off yesterday and I thought about culling her.. The one thing that stopped me was her willingness to fight! She laid in half of the shell when i helped her hatch only to find she had not absorbed the yolk.. So, i wrapped her in a wet towel and put her back in the incubator.. About 6 hours later I checked and she had almost absorbed it all but there was still a little bit left so I put the towel back over her and waited about another 2 hours.. When i went back and checked, it was finally all absorbed so i took her into the bathroom and snipped the membrane from her and then held a corner of the towel on it to stop the little bit of bleeding it did.. Then I placed her back in the incubator and waited.. She would kick and flail around but could not sit or stand.. She slept a lot and her neck was twisted (wry neck).. I gave her all day yesterday to rest in between using a piece of tubing to give her water.. I found that if i put it up to her beak so her beak would go in it, she would drink.. I also gave her one drop of Poly-vy-sol.. Well, I woke up this morning and she was perkier and actually able to sit up and stand.. It wasn't perfect and she kept falling down but she was trying.. She acted as if she had just hatched.. Her neck was still twisted so I put the vitamins straight into her water and also put a sprinkle of crumbles and let them get mushy to give her some extra nutrients.. i know she was still feeding off the yolk she had absorbed but i figured the extra couldn't hurt.. Well, I gave her a few drops every 30 min to an hour for a few hours.. By this afternoon, she was standing, walking and had the desire to drink.. She was still very wobbly but, she was gaining strength by the minute! I finally put her in the brooder with the rest of her hatch mates around 6 pm.. She actually went over to the water dish, got some water and then started pecking at the hay to get the crumbles that have been scattered by the others... Her name is MIRACLE!

Please don't think you have to cull every chick that hatches with problems.. Take into consideration the time you have to commit to caring for this animal, the willingness on it's part to recover and the issue it is having.. At the same time, don't feel that you have to save them all either.. I knew i could fix the wry neck problem with vitamins.. I also knew that it was much smaller than the others that were hatched when I opened that egg.. If the humidity had not gotten messed up and dropped while i was gone, she most likely would have hatched out in time on her own but i knew that she had a 100% chance of dying if i didn't intervene and at least a 50/50 chance if i did.. I chose to give her a better chance..

Here are the pics of all the chicks (including the 7 golden comets we picked up wednesday)

So I ended up with 18 hatch out of 24 eggs. In a homemade incubator that I handturned the eggs. I think that's a pretty good hatch.

Here's a couple of pics of the chicks.

Glad to see so many hatch. To those with problem hatches, I'm with you. I doubt I will ever buy hatching eggs again. I paid good money for the pleasure of watching eggs rot. My hatch consisted of 6 of my own flocks eggs, 12 that I went and picked up, and 8 that were shipped. 5 of mine hatched, 8 of the ones I picked up local hatched, and none, 0, zilch, not 1 of the shipped eggs hatched. Guess which I was really wanting to hatch....The box arrived without a scratch, not even a corner dented, the eggs were expertly wrapped ( took me 30 min to unwrap them ) and they were from a popular BYCer. I had such high hopes. ARRRRRRRRRRR.

There, that feels better. Thanks for letting me rant for a moment.

I may not have got all I wanted, but I am thankful for all I got. gotta love those fuzzybutts !!!!

I wish you all the best
