Wow! So much is going on here... I'm sorry I disappeared for a a day or so but I've been busy.. Here is my final count! 6 eggs that never made it to hatch but were fully developed, 7 production red/speckled sussex x barred rock, 4 Ameraucana, 5 delawares and 1 dark brahma x silver ameraucana that I am absolutely head over heels in love with! There is good news and then there is bad news.. Ok.. The bad news first..
I had to help 6 chicks hatch due to humidity issues at the very end.. A few of them were very badly shrink wrapped and three chicks had to be held in "chick ICU"... All three had not absorbed the yolk completely and I lost one of them today..
Now, the good news!!!
The two other chicks that were in "chick ICU" made a full recovery.. The first one got out yesterday and joined his/her hatch mates.. The last one was very bad off yesterday and I thought about culling her.. The one thing that stopped me was her willingness to fight! She laid in half of the shell when i helped her hatch only to find she had not absorbed the yolk.. So, i wrapped her in a wet towel and put her back in the incubator.. About 6 hours later I checked and she had almost absorbed it all but there was still a little bit left so I put the towel back over her and waited about another 2 hours.. When i went back and checked, it was finally all absorbed so i took her into the bathroom and snipped the membrane from her and then held a corner of the towel on it to stop the little bit of bleeding it did.. Then I placed her back in the incubator and waited.. She would kick and flail around but could not sit or stand.. She slept a lot and her neck was twisted (wry neck).. I gave her all day yesterday to rest in between using a piece of tubing to give her water.. I found that if i put it up to her beak so her beak would go in it, she would drink.. I also gave her one drop of Poly-vy-sol.. Well, I woke up this morning and she was perkier and actually able to sit up and stand.. It wasn't perfect and she kept falling down but she was trying.. She acted as if she had just hatched.. Her neck was still twisted so I put the vitamins straight into her water and also put a sprinkle of crumbles and let them get mushy to give her some extra nutrients.. i know she was still feeding off the yolk she had absorbed but i figured the extra couldn't hurt.. Well, I gave her a few drops every 30 min to an hour for a few hours.. By this afternoon, she was standing, walking and had the desire to drink.. She was still very wobbly but, she was gaining strength by the minute! I finally put her in the brooder with the rest of her hatch mates around 6 pm.. She actually went over to the water dish, got some water and then started pecking at the hay to get the crumbles that have been scattered by the others... Her name is MIRACLE!
Please don't think you have to cull every chick that hatches with problems.. Take into consideration the time you have to commit to caring for this animal, the willingness on it's part to recover and the issue it is having.. At the same time, don't feel that you have to save them all either.. I knew i could fix the wry neck problem with vitamins.. I also knew that it was much smaller than the others that were hatched when I opened that egg.. If the humidity had not gotten messed up and dropped while i was gone, she most likely would have hatched out in time on her own but i knew that she had a 100% chance of dying if i didn't intervene and at least a 50/50 chance if i did.. I chose to give her a better chance..
Here are the pics of all the chicks (including the 7 golden comets we picked up wednesday)
