i set 12 marans eggs and 12 olive eggers on march 1st, then i set 3 mixed barnyard eggs on march 2nd. well, i had set 4, but had to throw the "huge egg" out due to it smelling yucky. temp at 100 and humidity around 38-40%. i will try to candle the 3 mixed breed eggs since they are light in color, but the olives and dark browns, i probably won't even candle them at all. i've hatched those colors before and it's about impossible for me to see anything, and i even used one of hubby's high powered little flashlights. can't wait till 3 weeks is up!!

Welcomeee! Tell me about it! Half my set eggs are brown... I can never ever tell what is going on in there... Well I guess some of the time I can, but it's still super difficult. What kind of incubator are you using?

I have a question for everyone. May be a stupid question, but oh well. This is my first time using an actual incubator (not a homemade one) and I just can't help but wonder how everyone (who doesn't have an egg turner) goes about turning their eggs. I mean...when you turn them how does all the heat NOT escape. I mean...by the time I'm done turning my eggs the temp is back down to 80. Is that..normal?! Same thing with candling. If you open and close the bator a bunch of times the heat escapes. Do you guys have any.."methods"? (I'm using a hova bator- still air 1602N)

I just bought a brinsea high intensity candler. It works really well!

i'll look into that!! sounds great!
i'm using a hovabator 1588 with fan and egg turner. i know i use an egg turner, but have read lots on people hand turning, and if i were you i wouldn't worry to much about losing heat etc. cuz think about the momma hen, she gets up to eat and take poop breaks and the eggs are fine, and imagine how much heat and humidity is lost during that time? just my 2 cents worth, maybe others with egg turning experience will chime in with better thoughts.

Just remember if a hen was sitting on them, she'd get up to eat and drink and the same thing would happen.

I set my eggs 2 march at 20.00.
I set 12 eggs of my own bantam paint silkies (and one more the next morning), 15 "regular"silkies eggs and 15 runner duck eggs.
So i'm also hatching along with all of you.
It's my first time.

Welcome FUZZ FUZZ! This is my first hatch as well! Happy Hatching! This site is FULL of information for newbies! I'm so glad I am not anticipating this alone!

Yes this site is a world of information.

We can sit in front of the incubator together when the end comes in sight.

When i close my eyes, i can already see the little chicks...................

Now let's hope that i'll do everything right and the eggs are firtile/ not scrambled.
It is so eggsiting allready and still so many days to go.

Funny, its the first thing i think about when i wake up in the morning, sometimes i go check on them before i let the dogs out!
and the last thing i think about when i go to bed at night.....I think, should i set the alarm to wake me at midnight to check on them?

Fuzz, did you candle at all before you put them in the bator? Just to see what it looks like?

I did and want to do it everyday! I am sooooo eggsighted!
