Setting Today (03-02-2012)

Welkom as buddie to hatch with us.

A lot of newbies here, we can support each other during this exiting time.

I'm going to candel on friday, day seven.
I found my candeling light again so everything is set for friday.

I'm hoping to see if my own silkies are already firtile, they are still very jong.

And maybe one of them is getting broody already, she stay's in the coop, and she pecks at the rabbits an d the marrans.
And when i come in and she goes out, she eats and then goes back in. The only thing is she hasn't got any eggs to brood yet. I keep taking them away.
I think i'll let here keep the eggs that are going to be layed the coming days.

Well I broke down and got lazier. I hooked up an easier way to add water to the sportsman. The standard 5 gal bucket with a hose into the water trough. As it gets low just open the valve and fill it, never have to open the incubator to add wanter. Keeps my temps and humidity stable, now if I can stay calm and not open it till the 10th day I'll be doing good.

I have to open my bator to add water and rotate eggs. However I only have 2 eggs so it doesn't take very long. Less time that it would take momma hen to go get some food and water I figure. I wish I had a way to add water without opening my bator though. After this hatch I may try something like you've got but on a smaller scale. Hmmm....

Yep, couldn't help it. Wanted to see if I could see anything in my brown egg. Saw heart beats in both eggs! Now they are being left alone until day 10 when I'll check to make sure they are still developing. After day 10 should I just check before lockdown?

this is my fifth hatch, using a GQF sportsman cabinet. Last hatch was mine and two other folks, sort of a community hatch, we had 86% on them. My eggs were 93%, some of theirs were pretty old and pushing the limit. Now for percentages, I do it based on what I put into the incubator, not what goes into lockdown. So, an infertile eggs count against your percentage, an early quitter counts. Only those that actually hatch out and survive are considered in my hatch percentage count. I know some other do it differently, they count based on what they lockdown. I'm not freaked out about percentages, what happens happens. I just figure if I set 100 eggs, 94 hatch, I have a 94% success. Others set 100, put 60 in lockdown, all hatch so they call it 100%

Different accounting methods, not discounting anyone who does it the latter way.

Dreamer: What sort of fan did you use? I've heard the PC fans work well, heck mine is running all the time and this puter is a couple years old. I'n not big on restarting every day, turn it on and leave it run. (I know it's bad, just not patient enough to sit here and watch it boot up)

I am with you on percentages....I figure mine from what i put in the incubator to start and I usually get 99% hatches with my own eggs ....will join with a hatching group once I finish My incubator and can get some eggs to hatch

Okay took a peak last night and out of the 14 I set only one seems to not be doing anything! Will leave them alone until tomorrow now, LOL!

Arahhhhh! Someone turned of my thermostat in my living room so my house was 64F this morning instead of 70F. My bator couldn't keep up so it dropped to 97F. Not sure how long it's been there. Water wiggler dropped to 96F but the eggs are closer to the light so they are one or two degrees above that (I know this from moving the wiggler around during the "test phase"). I hope they are okay. Should I wait til day 10 (monday) to candle them again or just until day 7 (friday) to check them?

I wouldn't freak out about the temp change. It might delay the hatch by a couple hours, so what. I'd just wait till day 10 and take a peek, see whats happening.
Think about the hen, she gets up and walks outside to eat and poop, the egg cools a bit during this time. You should be fine. I had to open my bator to put in the water hose, open about 30 seconds, no big deal. Looked at it this am, the temp was spot on 99.5 and humidity at 38%. Auto turner has turned the eggs 107 times. SUre glad I didn't have to turn them 107 times by hand, Love technology

True about momma hen having to get up and eat and drink. That's why I wasn't worried about having to open my bator to add water/ turn eggs. But I didn't even think of it this morning when I saw my temps had dropped. Heh heh.. oops. Thanks for the reminder. 107 times eh? Wow... I'm gunna have to think about upgrading to a "real" incubator.

I cant wait to candle tomorrow to see what is growing! I have a decent assortment, 13 bantam cochin frizzle, 13 americauna, 5 polish, 7 silkies and a mixed dozen from a local, i know i have 3 green americauna 2 leghorn and the rest i have no idea! Heres hoping everything is going well! Glad to hear that all of you are seeing development in your eggs!
