But this morning I got awoke by CHIRP CHIRP....................my first Baby arrived. Looks like that one of the shipped Silkies was the first. One more is pipped.............so exicted

Yay. I can wait for my baby chicks!!! I was working on lock down yesterday and all my dogs just would ot stop barking out the back door. So I stoped to see what it was, 4' Water Moccasin!!! Yes it was so big and my smallest dog was all over it. It took over one hour to find it and kill it. My DH and DD knew I would not sleep if we did not find and kill it.

I went to lock down this morning with ONE rhode Island Red egg. I was not going to put anymore in the bator but I could not resist. I am going to put a special braclet on this chicken if it makes it. When I put in lockdown it was rockin'. I was shocked!!!! I am so happy it's doing great so far. Good luck to all the other 9-11 baby chickies out there. Girl or boy, this one will be named "Schmitty" in honor of my 3 sons serving in the military and going on thier 3rd tour in Iraq and Afganistan next April.

I've got my first pip! How can you be this excited about a cracked egg.

I find myself going in there every few minutes and staring while I listen for peeps.

I got my first hatchlings this morning. They're in there jostling the other eggs around but I recall something about:

1) Don't immediately remove the chicks from the incubator for some reason.
2) Don't turn the eggs on their last few days.

HEY! DON'T THE EARLY HATCHLINGS TURN THE UNHATCHED EGGS????

So I took the three of the four who were doing the most turning of the eggs even though they're not entirely dry yet, and placed them in a small box with a 100W lamp pointed into it about 8 inches from them.

PS: These eggs (8 of them) were laid 9/8 and started in the incubator the same day. For the next 4 days I took all the eggs laid on those days and put them in the incubator for a total of about 20 eggs. Thus far I've got 50% hatching out of the 8 started on 9/8. A little late but I reckon I'm going to end up with at least 10 chicks.

The reason you don't take them out right away is 1). They dry off better 2) You are on lockdown, so if you keep opening the Bator your humidity goes down and you get shrink wrapped chicks
FYI, you need to give the chicks room to get away from the light in case they get too hot. They should have chick starter and a chick waterer. Have fun, just thought you might like some pointers.;-)

After all my temp trouble going between 90 to 105 no matter what I did. and for the last several day barely make 95 with the weather changes I had given up. Yesterday I put onto the floor of the bator "just in case." I candled a couple days ago my best bets and they didn't look too good. Checked today just because and ONE HAS PIPPED. I never bothered with lock down cause I was sure it was hopeless.

I quickly added water to up the humidity (I dry incubate) and maybe, just maybe I will have that one hatch.

If just one hatches I NEED another. I ould hate to have to raise a single child.
