If you are setting Silkie eggs then it won't be 21 days, it will only be about 19 before you hear and see something.
I have often taken my eggs from my Sportsman on day 18 to candle and switch to my hatcher only to have chicks either pipping or halfway out already. Also I have had a few surprises in hatched chicks too.
But then today I also had one bantam Cochin hatch after all the others had and it is day 23. Depends on so many things even in the same hatching tray. Good thing I had some jumbo large fowl chicks hatching or I might have given up on this egg. Although, after so many I also tap the egg before I decide it may not make it and then I usually will open it. I have had a few to fool me so better safe than sorry.
